Na its one of those .17 HMR thingies for smoking bunny wabbits heads.

Here it is

Bollocks....

If Jonesy had a synthetic stocked HMR in, I'd have been tempted... As it is, he didn't... So see my sigline...

I've been hankering for one of these for quite a while and having tried to reach out and touch them (bunnies) beyond 70 yards have come to the conclusion that this was the ideal solution...

Are they as good as people say they are?

Accuracy is superb from rounds 1 to 10 on a clean dry bore... After 10 shots accuracy drops right off, so a field cleaning kit is essential for extended bunny bashing (the Otis + M7 is ideal)

I have been borrowing a mates Marlin for a while now (zeroed to 125 yards.... don't ask ) and it leaves my CZ452 in .22 in the dust...

We're going to have a clear out this weekend so I'll give it a baptism by fire and feedback...

How much are you paying for the ammo?....I've heard its pretty expensive (@ 40p a pop)

The .17HMR are brilliant rifles for rabbits up to 200m (if you a good enough shot) and foxs to about 40m.

The ammo is £25/100 for 17gr v-max, and £23/100 for 20gr FMJ solids

Didn't realise they did solid bullets

What if any advantage do these have over .17 Rem?

I only ask coz I have no familiarity with either of them but everyone seems to be going .17HMR mad

£11.75 for 50...

Zeroed mine for 80 yars last night and am planning on getting wasted tonight before being picked up for an early start....

CCI have only just started doing solids, and we have sold a few now as target rifles... Personally I'd consider it a varmint calibre only, but whatever the customer wants!

Its cheaper than a .17 Rem (ammo and rifle), not as powerful (slower) so can be used on more land, doesn't wear out the barrels as fast as a 17 Rem, and factory ammo is more readily available.

The 17HMR is a massive step up from the .22LR, but not as powerful as a centrefire like a .222...

People like it because is flat to 100m (max +/- 1" on elevation) and has immense killing power with the V-max head.

It also doesn't ricochet like a .22.

The only downside is that the very light heads are effected quite badly by wind.

3 fee....

ETA:  Note to self.. Need to read threads thoroughly...

Mine has a 16 inch barrel and is zeroed for 80 yards for a reason... Even on a clean barrel the group size would not give me guaranteed head shots at 120 yars () so i reeled it in and am now grouping inside a 2p with 5 rounds.... Field test tomorrow after I test out the new 45-70 Leverevolution ammo that arrived yesterday.....

Leverevolution test yesterday was a wash out....

The rifle needs a new follower installed to run them as they jam half way out the mag tube, fouling the breech.... Left a message for a lovely lady from Marlin USA, who actually rang me back (top marks Lauren), and put me on to a chap who will help me out.....

Tonights field test went well, bagged five in the brisk walk around 5 of the fields (will set up hide for Youtube moments )....

One of my favourit stands....

View from leaning post at bottom of garden onto calving field... Island on pond to left is 126 yards away...

Long range heaven....
