I'm totally knackered.  Having spent Saturday helping out at the NRA Open Day and today at my Club's Open Day I think I can safely say I've done my bit for National Shooting Week.
"Hello, have you shot before? What would like to shoot, no it doesn't kick etc"  The bonus is that everybody you take seems to enjoy the experience and had some fun. And they get to meet us, see what it's about, and are interested in what we do.  Maybe some will join us.
It's hard work, Saturday I did from about 9am to about 4pm on the point with a couple of comfort breaks, today I was on my feet from 10am to 4pm with again only a couple of 5 minute breaks. Tomorrow it's 10 mile stroll over the Malverns

Ditto.... just minus the walk over the Mavens

Still aching now and head full of sunburn !!!!

Cracking day though, a little under 500 punters through the door, a record I believe. Must have seen you there but blissfully unaware of your presence…..

PS I was the guy with all the Russian hardware with the dodgy soviet military ammo

Hi Loog
I was the old guy on the point without a RO vest most of the time and parked the Mini next to tent!  Got to take couple people on your russkie stuff.  Pity about no hold open on them.

My small club had a club day recently where we had family of members come down and have a shoot. We had to provide names beforehand.

How is it possible to hold slightly larger events where non-shooters can be introduced to the sport with a high degree of safety and remain within the law.?

I always ask my club at the AGM's about wider open days but there's an undercurrent of just wanting to keep our heads down and stay out of the limelight/headlines.

Your views.?

Cheers

From what I gather, attendees at open days have to pre-register but from what I've seen at Bisley they can register on the day.
So long as they fill in the declaration then the organisers are covered!!

I don't think the fuzz really ever check

I heard that the NRA has a special agreement with their local Police force and the Home Office to allow them to do the wider Open Days. Dunno how true that is...

I went into a local pistol club on Saturday, signed a little piece of paper and they gave me a Glock 19, M1911 and .44 Mag revolver. It was a good day, and I'll probably join when I'm eighteen.

Nice to meet you Bus_pass_warrior !

Yeah, your right the AK’s are a bit basic. Even the never M4 variant which has the hold open function only does so manually and not when the mag is empty. Nevertheless they may not be the most technological firearm in the world but they do what’s asked of them. I don't rate them for accuracy but they're fun to shoot nevertheless.

The Dragunov got quite a battering, I should have brought more ammo. It’s a pity I couldn’t let the public shoot the home loads, it really performs well on that unlike the military rubbish it ate on Saturday. Must have been a little disheartening for some

I knew there'd be loads of AR’s on the day so I thought I'd bring them along to give some diversity

Yes I think there's some special dispensation for National Shooting Week where the public can turn up and register on the day and shoot under one to one supervision.  I think the Club has to notify police beforehand though.  On Sunday the club range I was on just had .22's, mostly 10/22's.  My Evolution got a lot of interest and use.

Dunno, my only involvement was saying "hello and have you fired a gun before?" and making sure said firearm was safely pointing down range when they pulled the trigger.
One little kid was already familiar with red dot sights,"just like in Call of Duty!"

All the admin stuff is done well before they get to us. They come to our the tent with a ticket to prove they have registered / paid and get to shoot. Like Bpw says, we just do the friendly coaching safety bit. Hopefully selling the sport while we do it.

Anyone can come to our range any time when it is open, and ask if they can shoot.

They pay the range fee and the insurance ticket and can choose what they want to shoot and buy the ammo that they will use.

The RSO will then delegate a senior member to help that person get set up, and evaluate his safety. If that person is deemed safe, then he will be allowed to carry on under his own steam until he is finished, the designated senior member who has been keeping an aye on the person makes sure that all of the club weapons and rest ammo is returned and then the guest can either meet and greet other members of the club in the Gasthaus above the range, or leave.

If a member knows the person through work or other means and has just cause to be concerned about the person he approaches the RSO., and makes it known to him, who has the authority to ask that person to leave, but it never happens.

All that hard work and some chavvy pratt posts this on YouTube.

He must have filmed it at last Septembers Open Day?  And another successful product of the English education system "Chavs and there(sic) guns"

Can't see your problem Dave?

I was expecting a clip of some spotty hoodie shooting 'homeboy' style with a borrowed GSG-5 ...

What's there is perfectly normal, just because some knob has put a stupid label on it, it still doesn't appear untoward..
