Since I've been here a little while here are some positives and a few negatives I have noticed about the country. The Good: Mail service-your postal service puts ours to shame, it's fast, cheap and reliable Road signs-almost no stop signs, but rather "yield" signs or as you say "give way", roundabouts are good too Road construction-you have the courtesy to post signs warning of impending road closures, and you have nice automated signal devices for working road crews Grocery stores-good variety and good quality produce and meat at a decent price There are more, I'm sure they'll come to me later and I'll edit them in. The Bad: Roads-atrocious, especially here in the fens where I live, no shoulders, improperly banked turns, poorly engineered Water taps-why oh why haven't you discovered the wonders of warm water in the bathroom? Closets-what are those? ![]() Airfare-why is it 100 pounds more to fly from NY-London and back than from London-NY and back? (same dates and airline) ![]() Railroad crossings with manually operated crossbars? What the hell? I'm sure it's some union protectionism at work but when I'm on my way to work and in a hurry the extra 2 minutes it takes the station guy to walk downstairs and open the gates matters. Overall it's not a bad place to live, though I do miss my guns. I'll be taking a holiday every so often to visit them and shoot all the new ones I have been buying while over here. |

Go on tell us, how many times have you found yourself driving on the right-hand-side of the road ? The poor road layout is probably just because its quite a rural location, but the basic layout/path of lots of roads in rural areas are can be quite ancient. Stretches of the A1 dual-carriageway actually follow the path of roads built by the Romans. |
You know after the initial break in period I haven't had the temptation to drive on the other side. Having a right hand drive car probably helps with that. I do admit walking up to my car on the wrong side when in the carpark on many occasions, that's a harder habit to break.
