Hey guys, BrianSmithWins referred me over here because I was discussing some side charging options for my target AR. I have a Target/Varmint AR with a disabled gas system because my handloads aren't anywhere near mag. length, and I really don't like rooting around in the grass for my spent brass. Frankly, a charging handle is a crappy, cumbersome way to cycle a single shot AR, so I figured a side charging handle would be the way to go, its more convenient, plus it seems I would gain the advantage of having a stronger camming action as well, but I have a few options I need help with. My first route is to simply have a slot milled back from the ejection port and have a charging handle tapped into the bolt carrier...This was my original plan, and seemed simple enough. ASA offers an upper receiver/bolt carrier combo with a charging handle on the left side of the receiver....any advantage here? It seems the initial cost would be higher, because I'm buying all new parts, instead of simply modifying my existing B.C. and receiver. What do you guys use, and why do you use it? |
You can do what you like to your barrel as long as it remains no shorter than 12"(overall length not withstanding), and you don't try to sell it on without re-proofing.. |

Hi I'd go for the right side cocking handle option. The straight pull action is easy and you don't have to push it forward as the spring does it for you. I've not experienced any problemshow hope it helps your choice |

OK guys, thanks for the suggestions. I was beginning to lean toward the first option myself. By the way, that bolt assembly looks pretty snazzy I sent White Oak an e-mail a few days ago about having my upper and carrier fitted for a side charging handle, but no reply yet...Maybe I should call them. By the way...since I can never get an answer in the appropriate forum, could anyone suggest a company that could supply me with a finish chambered no-turn/neck 6PPC, without a gas port? |
White Oak did a couple of side chargers for guys in our club, but he didn't do them the way I/we would. As for the 6PPC, try Scott Medesha in Apache Jct, AZ or Derrick Martin at Accuracy Speaks in Mesa, AZ, but I wouldn't recommend it as you'll probably end up in a whole world of extraction hell |
This one was done by WOP, but I supplied the cocking handle:![]() The link below is to a photo of one of the other WOP uppers: WOP Match AR |

StreetFighter, what would you have done differnt from White Oak? My main concern is functionality....Simply a handle to manualy cycle the action.... (Should call a local smith to see if he could even do it for me) And about the PPC...extraction issues? Please do tell, I'de love to hear. Im trying to compile some vendors/materials for an up-scale target AR and would love to know your thoughts on going the route most traveled when it comes to target shooting...The 6PPC. I know E.R. Shaw mass produces 6mmPPC bull barrels for the AR, but I'm weary of loose tolerances in the chamber. I have one of their 5.56mm bulls which shoots great, but I dont want to deal with a dummy gas-block on the new barrel. Also, I dont think Shaw hand-laps or air-guages their contract barrels...and all they make are contract barrels. :EDIT: White Oak wants $125.00 + s&h and most likely a several week turn around time to do the modifications. I'm gonna take the rifle over to a local smith to see what he would charge....If I could get him to do it for under $150.00 I may just have it done localy. |
