Assemble at the 800 yard firing point on Stickledown Range

THE HENRY WHITEHEAD CONVERTED GALLERY RANGE (CGR) MATCH 3

Outline of the Match

1. This match consists of four practices, during which firers will engage targets from distances of 300, 200 and 100 meters. The practices to be fired are based on those for the Henry Whitehead Cup (Army Rifle Association Match 3).

Conditions

2. a. Ammunition Four magazines of 10 rounds.

b. Targets Two DP1 targets side by side.

c. Exposures See paragraphs 3, 4, 5 and 6 below.

d. HPS Each hit will score 4 points. The individual HPS (Highest Possible Score) is therefore 160 points. The number of hits will be read out at the end of the match.

e. Ties Ties will be broken on the greatest number of hits on the right hand target.

3. Practice 1 Procedure:

a. Firers are to load and adopt the prone position 100 yards from the firing point.

b. A single DP1 target will then be exposed for forty seconds. This is the signal to run forward to the 300 yards firing point, adopt the prone position, make ready and open fire.

c. After 40 seconds the target will be lowered if not hit. Two seconds later the other target will be exposed for three seconds, and will then be lowered if not hit.

d. There will then be eight further exposures of three seconds, of either the left or the right target, in random order over a period of four minutes.

e. At the end of this practice, firers will be ordered to unload and their rifles will be cleared. They will then be ordered to reload with a magazine of 10 rounds.

4. Practice 2 Procedure:

a. Firers are to load and adopt the standing alert position at 300 yards.

b. A single DP1 target will then be exposed for eight seconds. This is the signal to adopt the prone unsupported position, make ready and open fire.

c. After four seconds the target will be lowered if not hit. Two seconds later the other target will be exposed for four seconds, and will then be lowered if not hit.

d. There will then be four further series of exposures of the left hand target for four seconds followed, after an interval of two seconds, by the right hand target for four seconds.

e. There will be an interval of two seconds between all series.

f. All targets will fall when hit.

e. At the end of this practice, firers will be ordered to unload and their rifles will be cleared. They will then be ordered to reload with a magazine of 10 rounds.

5. Practice 3. Procedure:

a. Firers will be ordered to adopt a position of observation, i.e. prone with both hands on the rifle, safety catch applied and observing the targets.

b. A single DP1 target will then be exposed for one second.

c. This will be the signal to get up and advance to 200 yards, adopt the standing alert position, make ready and release safety catches.

d. Thirty seconds later there will be ten exposures of either the left or the right  DP1 target for four seconds, in random order with irregular intervals of between 5 and 20 seconds.

e. Firers may adopt the standing, kneeling or squatting position to fire, but must return to the standing alert position between exposures.

f. Targets will fall when hit.

g. After the last exposure firers will then be ordered to unload and rifles will be cleared,  Firers will then be ordered to load with their last magazine of 10 rounds.

6. Practice 4. Procedure:

a. On completion of Practice 3 firers will be ordered to “Watch Out”.

b. A single DP1 target will then be exposed for one second.

c. This will be the signal to advance to 100 yards, adopt the standing alert position, make ready and release safety catches.

d. Thirty seconds later there will be five exposures of a single DP1 target for seven seconds with irregular intervals of between 5 and 20 seconds.

e. Firers are to fire not more than two shots during each exposure from the standing unsupported position, but must return to the standing alert position between exposures.

f. Targets will be “up and hold”.

g. After the last exposure firers will then be ordered to unload and rifles will be cleared.

The morning match run and shoot times are really quite generous with 90 secs to get to the point and fire ten rounds, you could almost walk and still get all your rounds off.

In the afternoon you will have to run a little bit faster if you don't want to miss any target exposures.

Who is going to bother then, as Target-Hunter said if we don't use the electronic targets at Bisley then they'll go back to Saab and that will be the end of that.

   I'll be there, who else?

Seriously I need to sort out my shooting with a bit more range time. Not shot that good in the last couple of comps and not confident with my come-ups anymore.  I've got a club day Saturday and we will be starting at a 100 and working back up to 600.  See you all at the January CSR?

I think that there might be a chance to shoot another 'Static' match on the Sunday morning so there could be a total round count for the day of about 100 or so.  Even more reason to come along.

Weathers not looking too good for the weekend, and if its as windly as my drive to work it will be tricky (for me anyway) hitting the target.
12/7/2007 12:17:55 AM EDT
[#26]
Remember it is "Service Rifle" conditions are not always ideal.  If the wind blows you just have to deal with it.

Question?

When sighters are included for a practice, may they be taken from any position, or only from the position to be used in the practice.

e.g. can I take sighters prone supported before a  standing practice?

Jim
12/7/2007 3:02:57 AM EDT
[#28]
You can take them from any position, but............for most gain, they should be taken from the position you shoot the practise from (providing you already know your zero's), in which case they should be treated as practise shots

Mark

As SF sighters can be take from any recognised position, generally though you don't get sighters at 100 yards before the usual standing/kneeling practice.

Yes even though the weather was not nice, it was again another enjoyable day.  Hope more people come in January to show their support for the electronic targets.

I've got it.  Actually there is a tie break procedure, done on the right hand target but as we've both got the same number of hits on both targets then I've decided that I'll keep the medal until the next CSR when you can have a look at it in the car park.

Actually Martin Farnan will need to get another gold made up because we are both entitled.
