Is this sight any good up to 500 yards

NO!

It is primarily a CQB sight, you can get to 200 (by default if you zero at 50)
maybe 300 at a push with a lot of hold over!

For similar money I would get an 2nd hand  ACOG from the EE or E-BAY
(If you want to go to 500 with a 'simple' sight, if not then get a Leupold or S&B)

What would it be for?

Eotechs RULE!

But not for anything past 200 so it seems.

Most functional, useful sighting system I've ever used. But it is mounted on my .22LR Rabbit rifle.
