Hmm, I've always loved pistols so much...looking at some of the pics in the armoury forum makes me SICK!

Then again, I think I would probably buy a pistol per month if they were allowed in the UK making me very poor and very much in debt.

You can own them in Belgium without any restriction...

Hmmm, that may be, but it's nicer to be able to handle them daily, and be able to shoot them at least 3-4 times a week

Meanwhile in Ireland they have unbanned everything including Full Auto!

Having said that though, you do need an FAC for an air pistol over there....

Andy,

Please tell me more about the "un-banning" in Ireland, especially the full-auto part?  When did this happen?  I had read some of the Irish laws several years back and they did not look shooting-friendly.

Late 2004. Up tll then verything except shotguns and bolt action rifles up to .270 was banned.

The ban came in 1972 to stop the guns getting knicked by the IRA. A shooter called the local Superintendants bluff and asked for an elephant gun and a .22 pistol. The Super said no, they're banned. So off he goes to the Supreme Court and demands a Judicial Review. He argued that as the total ban on handguns and large bore , semi auto etc rifles had not stopped the IRA getting guns, the ban was pointless and should be set aside as it did not do what it was intended to do. The Judges agreed!

So on the basis of the judgement all the 32 years of misery ended. Now the interesting thing about gun licensing in Ireland is that there is no 'official' policy on what can and can't be owned, it rests with your local Superintendent to make a decison on your application. If you can make a valid case and he agrees you can own what you want. Some people have convinced their local PoPo they need a full auto for training purposes, there are a number of Glock 18's privately owned in Ireland now.

So you see, gun ban's CAN be overturned, it took 32 year but it went from almost nothing was legal to anything can be applied for.

Now Northern Ireland is different again, although it is part of Britain it has much different gun laws. CCW is legal, possession of handguns and semi auto rifles for self defence is perfectly legal too. A number of Firearms Dealers own full auto HK MP5's for self defence!

UK pistol/rifle semi-auto rules back to what they were before the last lot of changes.
No fannying round with temporary olympic licences for poxy calibres. Reinstate the previous laws completely. They achieved no measurable reduction in gun crime.

I see no middle ground and I dont see why I should.

Look's like the title of this thread really did hit the nail on the head, even if Johan meant something else.

Having read Vito's coment's about the Irish law change's, wouldn't it be possible to attempt the same in the UK?

Please don't call me a witch (and burn me) on this idea, is it worth a try, or is no one willing to give it a try?

OK, you've conviced me;

This weekend I'll either shoot my Glock 17 or my Walther PPK in .380 ACP.
And at the moment I'm leaning towards the PPK.

Maybe next weekend I'll shoot one of my rifles.

I think at the moment the biggest problem is public perception. The sheeple masses are too bainwashed by TV+movies, and almost all people see guns as being bad/evil. They cannot fathom the idea that people collect/enjoy guns just like people enjoy stamp collecting or jogging...this perception by the general public had been achieved by the media and government....the government especially runs a concerted campaign to keep shooting as a sport out of the minds of the sheeple...I think deep down the politicians/socialist goverment are just afraid that the people will have more power if they are allowed to have arms...

Socialist governments instinctively fear a population with guns.... and historically they have good reason to.

We aren't 'supposed' to be run by Socialists here yet.

It's rather evident we are though.

Denmark, a true Socialist goverment has 50% income tax,  200% car purchase tax, but free healthcare and free education, so do we want the same here?

I don't.

Nothing wrong with Glocks IMO. I like them.
The problem for most people is...they aren't fancy enough.
I've always found them to be accurate and reliable. And they're simple to use.

The USP on the otherhand is over complicated and over engineered. And I've seen them go wrong.

Rather'd have the Glock.

I really liked the feel of the Glocks, but I'm not accurate with them at all. Might be due to their low weight.

Sorry to butt in but I've carried a Glock for 8 years in rain, snow, heat and humidity,  and have not had a problem with it.  IMHO it is one of the better sidearms for the money.  However it still is not as nice as my 1911-A1 for accuracy or coolness.

Sorry to hit up your hometown pages but I'm headed to Ireland this summer to visit the family and I wanted to see what all the talk was.
