I was stationed in Germany back in 2005 and failed to pay a speeding ticket. I was young and stupid/thought I would never go back. It turns out I'm planning on taking my parents to Europe
in August and wanted to fly into Munich. Should I worry about paying it before I get there? Any insight would be appreciated. |

Forget it then, as it will have expired by now (Verjährt), even if you get pulled over in a routine check and the Polizei check you on the computer data bank, and if there is still a fine open you get to pay it on the spot and it's sorted Enjoy your stay Tony |

What used to happen with citations for GI's that pcs'd out of country was; the Polizei liasion officer would forward the ticket to the local MP's Veh Registration. MP's would attempt to locate the servicemember within USAEUR. If the GI was still in country, his command received the ticket for action. If the GI was pcs'd out or deployed, then the Polizei were informed and they would usually void the ticket...depending on the violation. Some violations did follow the servicemember.
It's been about 5 years since I've been there so the procedure may have changed. If you want I can probably get ahold of the liasion officer in Heidleberg and ask him to check on your citation though |

Apparently I got a ticket in Italy last summer for some unknown traffic offence - I found out about it 8 months later when I was checking my monthly credit card statement. The car rental company just dinged my credit card without telling me. I got that reversed. To this day they can't tell me what the offence was for - I didn't receive a ticket or wasn't pulled over when I was there. Some company from Florence keeps on sending me demand letters for 140 Euros. I'm not sure what to do as it has been over a year - I recently received a recorded delivery letter from them demanding I pay.
The car rental company btw was Europcar, and have been most unhelpful in trying to get this resolved. Very difficult given the time difference and language issue. |

Interesting, how much was deducted from you credit card by the Europcar people? Tony |

Interesting, how much was deducted from you credit card by the Europcar people? Tony Europcar deducted $60 for processing the fine. The demand for 140 Euros is on top of that. What gets me is that they took 8 months to notify me and haven't been able to tell me what traffic offence I'm supposed to have committed. I'm guessing this might just be a scam by the cash strapped city of Florence to raise revenue. Unsuspecting overseas tourists are soft targets. |

The cheapest way out of this would be to pay the current fine with the extra, you could go the hard and expensive route, and not pay and keep ignoring them to see what they do, or get lawyered up and contest it in an Italian court.
It's a crock of shit either way, maybe the Italian Consulate in the US could help, or failing that talk to your local Mafia about it ;-) Tony |

Why should I pay when they haven't even told me what traffic offence I've committed? |

Ah, Italians. They take whatever they can get. I was on my way to Vicenza once, on my motorcycle, and got pulled over. The Carabineri officer wanted 300 Euros for speeding. I only had 50 on me, and some US money. So he took the 50 and let me go. I didn't ask for a receipt... Support your local Mafia, you might need them one day! |
