Hi all!
I will be in Albuquerque later this week. Any recommendations on Gun Shops? I might be in the market for a 1903 Springfield (shooter) or an Aug A3. Or, you know, anything fun/interest/good deals. Thanks! |

I can make more than one trip. Just be prepared to deal with sticker shock on those older rifles. I seem to recall only one or two being in the 400 range and "Shootable" while the others were listed for 1 & 2K plus with the tag "collectors item only" but it's been a while since I've looked at that rack. They never seem to sell them because they're always there. Personally I wanted the SVT-40 they had but it sold before I could get the money together. so I avoid the surplus rifle rack like the plague now!

Albuquerque Gun Shops = Crack Den Prices. Once in awhile, I will peruse Ron Peterson's or Charlie's just to get a good laugh. Get on Gunbroker and save yourself some dough. My experiences as well. Ron's has quite a selection, but you need to do a good visual inspection of the bores and internals, because some of the guns are really worn out and shot out. |

And never..ever..put a nice blued weapon on lay-away there with them. Every time I have the gun always comes out with rust on it when I'm ready to pick it up.

Fuck Ron's, where all the gang bangers go to fail their NICS checks. Their too busy in there with the thugs to deal with anyone. I used to only buy my guns from Ron's but since the Obama scare it is far to crowded for any decent service.
Charlies has great CS in my opinion but the prices are crazy high. I like Los Ranchos for their selection, prices and CS. JW Krum's up in Rio Rancho is worth visiting. It is a little hole in the wall place but he will order you anything you want or you can order it yourself via Gunbroker or whatever for a 25 dollar transfer fee. He is also one of the few FFLs that will actually give you their FFL to email or mail yourself so you don't have to keep getting on them to send it to the shipping dealer. Some more tactical gun shops are S&S in Rio Rancho and Calibers on Pase Del Norte but their new gun prices are also crazy high. Shooters Den on San Mateo is ok but their used selection is lacking. A new place I have yet to check out is Warrior Steel in the south valley, I have heard they have good prices on new tactical carbines. Whatever you do avoid Precision Arms on Menaul at all costs! |

Ron's is gonna suffer with Travis leaving last week as well. He was an asset.
I know JW, hes a good guy. I know Shane at S&S a bit better, his new store is gonna Rock. He's really working hard to have a great business. Charlies I've heard good things about, same as Los Ranchos. The rest I can't speak for, other than to say AVOID any other Gunstore on southern.

Oh yeah, stay away from AC firearms in Rio Rancho.
I wanted a stainless safety installed on my Kimber and they're the local 1911 experts. So I go go up there and ask if I buy the safety from them will they install it? The guys says sure but it will be a few hours before they can get to it. I come back and pick up my gun and they wanted 110 dollars for custom fitting! I finally got them to charge me as agreed but what a load of crap. I remember Travis, he sold me my last gun from Ron's. Glasses and beard right? He was also the only guy up there who knew anything about hand loading. Shane and Arnie at S&S are great guys, I just can't afford the high end stuff they carry. |

Not unless August Arms is now AC gunshop. ![]() AC Firearms or AC Gunshop? The two don't appear to be related unless I'm missing something. Allen at AC Gunshop is great and operates from his home. He does transfers for $20, tax included. AC Firearms, sorry. Its the RR peeps. |

Anyone who's worked at Ron Peterson Firearms, or known someone who did, would understand why Travis left for greener pastures. While the abruptness of his departure took me by surprise, it wasn't hard to understand the "why." I've heard he got a better job selling Caterpillar equipment in Amarillo. That's all I know about that.
Full disclosure: I have been associated with Ron Peterson's in practically every way except actually working there, so I'm a little biased. My experience has been almost 100% positive, and I've bought tons of stuff there over the years. Sure, guns are $20 more than at Sportsman's Warehouse, but Peterson's will actually help you if you have a problem after the sale. Twice, I've received full refunds on guns that turned out to be lemons. I stopped doing business with Los Ranchos after the owner, Jerry, did a terrible hack job installing night sights on my 1911 & then wouldn't make it right. Eventually, Springfield Armory fixed his F-up, for less than what he had charged for poor workmanship and inferior parts. Jerry didn't even bother to respond to my Better Business Bureau complaint, so don't make the mistake of thinking that he gives a damn about "customer service." I never go in that shop any more. Shooter's Den: Haven't bought any guns there, but I have bought ammo and pepper spray. One of the few shops in town which has Mace brand spray, with the flip-top. They have a good selection of ammo for a small shop. The sales staff has always been friendly and helpful. One of their floor guys is a Ron Peterson's alumnus. Not sure about the gun prices at Charlie's, as I've only bought accessories there, no guns. I got a deal when I cleaned out their inventory of S&W 1006 mags a few years ago. I once visited AC Firearms to have some Glock parts installed. It was a satisfactory experience, but I avoid shopping in Rio Rancho when possible. Their sales tax rate is very high. I haven't been up there for a few years, but the owner sometimes shoots with us at Zia. Hope this helps. |
