I just moved from Virginia to Las Cruces and have been looking into getting back into shooting. I was wondering if anyone knew the carry laws for an AR (until I can work up enough money for a handgun was thinking of carrying it around on walks and such.) From what I've been able to gather through various phone calls and a little searching on the web it looks like I can open carry the AR loaded or unloaded.

Is this correct or do I have incorrect information?

Open carry is legal. Just be prepared for trouble from the sheeple.

Welcome to NM!

Thanks! Really like it out here, don't miss the humidity at all; long as I'm following the laws sheeple don't bother me much. :)

It won't be the sheeple that bother you.

It will be the police/SWAT responding to several cell phone calls about a man with a machinegun in public.   And expect some of those calls to have minor/major exaggerations for dramatic effect.

I can't even shoot rapid fire out in the desert, without someone reporting it as full automatic fire, usually a Fudd who hates black rifles.

You may be acting within the law, but even completely legal actions can bring a heap of trouble into your life.   NM has its share of moonbats and libtards too.

You'll miss the green after a while.  I lived in NM for 8 yrs and had to get back to TN

Having live in NM all my life I just ask the question what is green?

I mean I see it in chili but that is the only thing I know of that is green...

Welcome.

Like others have said.  If you are going for a walk with an AR slung, be prepared to deal with the law.

Though, depending where you're walking around LC, it's not a horrible idea.  Nice place, but damn close to Mexico.  I spend a good amount of time there and I'm always armed.

I live in an apartment complex (would probably be ok there) right across the street from a school (which would not be ok). Any walks I took out closer to the mountains would feel a lot safer with something on me.

I'll miss the green from Virginia, but the humidity...never

If it's greenery you want, just drive to the east side of the mountains.

Seriously?  Hell, when I go out to the desert there is usually no one for miles around.  I shoot when I went pretty much however I want.  The only interaction I've had with the police out in the desert is when we were shooting out of the back of a moving truck after hours. And even then, the deputy just told us to go home. (I know, stupid. But I was young.)

And I know I'm gonna catch hell for posting that.

Welcome to Las Cruces Red Rum.

The only time we open carry ARs around here is from our house to the truck. I'm sure it's legal but I have never seen it done in the city.  If you need to know a place to shoot, let me know.  I know good places on the North, West and East side of LC.  As for the south near the UNiversity, I lived there a year or so and never found a good place where I could spend the day shooting without someone walking up on us with their dog or bike or something.  But everywhere else there are plenty of wide open spaces.

Also there is the range to the east but it's one heck of a drive when there are so many places close by to shoot.  Though the Corralitos right behind the range is a great place to hunt for predators and rabbits.

Just so you know the best gun store around is New Deal in Deming. Hard to find so shoot me an IM and I'll get you directions.  There is also Custom Cartridge in Mesilla Park.  They are friendly and usually have plenty of reloading components and ammo on hand.  Third there is Command Bunker but be warned the people that run the place are usually in a sour mood.  Great deals on ammo cans though. Picked up some 40mm cans for my loose brass just the other day.

As for open carrying a handgun, my friends and I do it all the time without more than a few double takes or questions.  And never a rude one yet.  The police here are well aware of the carry laws and as long as you're polite you shouldn't have an issue.

Didn't Command Bunker go out of business?

No sir. Moved to another location across the street and a half mile north. Tough to find because it's a little set back.

Awesome info 44Punk; thanks. I may have to go out this weekend and look at all three of those stores; Deming seems like quite a drive but if their products are worth the few extra miles, a good drive is always fun. The only range I've heard about around / near here is "Butterfield Shooting Range", if 15 miles or so is close. :p

Odd question, since I'm still mostly naive and everyone here seems to know so much: I've been shooting all .223 through my rifle but I honestly don't know if I can shoot 5.56. The only markings on the barrel are "Chromed" and "DSC 1/9". Taken it completely apart and used daylight + flashlight but I can't find what the upper is chambered in. Have no problem shooting only .223 but if I come across some 5.56 for a good price kind of like to know I won't run the risk of blowing my fingers / face off shooting it. (in 4 year's I've put maybe 1000 rounds through the rifle, I'm sure I could ask 10,000 questions for every one I could answer at this point )

556and 223 are essentially the same.

some will tell you they are different. Some will tell you they are identical. The real answer is they are close enough you wont have any worries.

Only time it may come into play is in a Wylde Chamber.

Thanks for the info, sir  He is the only one in the state that carries the 40mm ammo cans.  They are perfect for a multi-caliber day at the range.
