I personally prefer and carry one of the Garmin eTrex models.

I have the the original Vista model.  Mine is 10 years old and still works flawlessly.  I used it on the trail for multi day hikes, hunting, mountain biking, and have found misc other uses from time to time.

My model is the original, the new version of mine and the other eTrex models now have the updated antenna for much better reception in deep woods and canyons.  And you also have a choice of the high contrast models that have nice color screens.

Battery life on the three upper models including the Vista is approx 25 hours.    Battery life is something you will have to pay attention to on the other Garmin models listed above.  Generally the more features, the shorter battery life.

On top of that the eTrex models are pretty small.  smaller than a pack of cigarettes, and their are a lot of soldiers that have personally bought them to carry over in Iraq and Afganistan for personal use or emergency use..  Not to mention I know IPO's that have had them issued over seas in different countries.
