Is there a member in central Arkansas area who is familiar with working on 1911 style pistol?

Here's the issue that I have:  Whenever I try to pull the trigger with the safety on (hammer cocked), the hammer doesn't drop.  However, when I disengaged the safety (after trying to pull the trigger) the hammer drops.

Any thoughts?

Is this a trick question?!

I think he means the hammer is dropping simply by thumbing the safety not by pulling the trigger.  I don't have a 1911 so can't comment.

OP you might try posting in one of the handgun forums.  Might get a better response.  Sounds screwed up either way.

just out of curiosity... what gun was this(brand and model)? was anything done to it prior to the problem? Has it always done this. I remember S&W having a similar issue with their 1911s of a particular model

The thumb safety needs to be replaced. I had a 1911 do the exact same thing. I replaced the TS and it now functions perfectly.

For the wise asses: I took the thumbs safeties from my other 1911s and installed them in the malfunctioning pistol. The malfunction did not return until the original TS was reinstalled.

The malfunctioning TS was installed in the other 1911s and it malfunctioned in each of the other pistols.

It's a Dan Wesson "custom" that I bought new about 7 years ago.  Shot about 200 rounds or so and been in hibernation since.

I have got a 1911 that has hammer follow. Actually the hammer won't even stay in the "cocked" position. I take it somewhere, they fix it, then after 50 or so rounds the hammer follow is back. It makes it a dangerous gun.

Interesting... Keep us posted. I'd like to know what the smith says. Is this a common problem with 1911s?

Not if you have a competent gunsmith.

or a 2 digit IQ.

I changed out a safety on one of my 1911s and it went fine. No issues or malfunctions.

Or you could join the club and buy / trade for a Kimber.

*Go ahead, flame away.  I know you can't help yourselves.*

I would except I don't like the front serrations....  I think I want to look for a worn out Colt 45 at the next gunshow. :)

Really, that is staying on topic, just like pistols made in 1911, things today are vastly improved and no one would ever consider that set up a top of the line battle implement.

Since I have no plans to be in a battle anytime soon... lets get back on track.

I contacted Jeb as recommended by several of HTF members and, hopefully, we can get together this afternoon for a quick thumb safeties swaps.  Thanks for the advice - you know who you are. :)

As for the no front slide serrations.... yes, I suppose I could get a Springfield or or Rock River but I always wanted a Colt with old and worn bluing. Odd, I know.
In the end, if there's a god deal in the equipment exchange, Colt or no colt, I might bite.  Then again a friend of mine suggested an Ed Brown's 1911.

Lets ban guns.... they are bad for my saving accounts.

This Colt is in your AO and needs a new home.

Just have Jeb build one from scratch.  He can do what ever you want.
