you know when i could tell the article was full of shit?
right about here:

With barrel and bolt switched, it was to fire 7.62x39mm from
indigenous AK-47 magazines.

unpossible.  indicating the author is a damn fool and ALL of his "facts" are suspect.

Ok...why?   The author was only stating what the program had called for not whether it would work or not.  I suppose one of the reasons the program was cancelled was because perhaps it indeed wouldn't work.  But don't blame the author for stating facts about the program.  This was a Special Ops program.

I wouldn't go that far.  I did find this over at the Retro forum:

Zak Smith is on the level and is probably one of the best civilian shooters on this site. SOCOM worked with 7.62x39 ARs. Its part of the same program that hgave us the Mk12 rifles and lead to the SCAR.

I heart the 6.8 round. One of my few gun purchases for next year (its an optics year) is gonna be an LWRC 8" 6.8. I just wish ammo supply was a little better.

AKs still suck

oh, i ain't questioning SOCOM dicking around with 7.62x39 –– whatever it takes to get an edge in combat, right? but specifying AK mags to work in an AR?  yeah, i suppose you could dedicate an armorer to the task of modding mags, buy why?  that shit don't make a lick of sense and should be obvious.

those still fire 5.56mm, they are NOT chambered in 7.62x39

the mags were cobbled together by locals to try to increase mag capacity before the 30 round USGI mags were widely issued.

"Even though the project was canceled, Special Forces soldiers had come to realize 7.62x39mm provided increased lethality over 5.56"

THIS is the part of the article that is REAL BS.

It has been shown over and over that within the fragmentation threshold of 5.56x45mm, it is FAR more destructive of tissue than 7.62x39mm.

Outside of that range, yes, it is likely that 7.62x39 might prove to have an advantage simply due to the slightly increased frontal area, but I will still take a 75/77gr OTM 5.56mm over a 7.62 ANY day.

Since it is unlikely that I will be using a firearm in a defensive posture in anything over 150m, I will take the reduced recoil, increased accuracy, increased magazine capacity, increased terminal performance, and reduced cost that a heavy 5.56mm offers.

but its your money and to each their own.

It wasn't supposed to work in an AR.  They were trying to develop a new weapon "Special Purpose Rifle - Variant (SPR-V)" which is/was not an AR although it was supposed to maintain characteristics of the M4.  The whole purpose was to be able to use available 7.62 x 39 ammo when called for from the same gun(with a barrel/bolt carrier changeout) that would also work with 5.56.

It didn't make sense, and that's why it went nowhere.

Imagine being in the field, hauling an extra bolt, barrel, and set of magazines around just so you could use the local "hadji special" ammo cobbled together by the finest equipment and QC the 3rd world has to offer.

yea, I'll pass on that one, thanks.

If for whatever reason you want to maintain plausible deniability by leaving no US mfg brass around, THEN just bring an AK or Colt 7.62x39 or MGI Hydra or whatever along.  Its not like you wont know going in what ammo you are going to be using.
