Let it be known that I no longer trust a .380 acp for self defense. I was at the farm today do some lookin around for deer sign, when I walked right up on a family of raccoons. These raccoons are destructive to feeders and needed to be regulated. I had the Ruger LCP on me loaded with Hornady Critical Defense. From 6 feet I shot one of them 3 times and it ran towards me to about 3 feet, never saw me. I could see it was covered in blood. I fired and hit at 3 feet so to dispatch it. It took off!!!! So I went back to the truck hoping it would die while I went to retain more armament. Returning with a 9mm carbine I jumped said raccoon and it ran about 50 yards. So I waited about 10 mins, then proceeded tracking. I saw a vine wiggling from a tree and the closer I got I saw the raccoon attempting to climb the tree. At which point I finished him off. Had this been a motivated attacker, I would have had an issue.
Ruger LCP .380 is on its way out. That is all. |

Plenty of blood. It stood up on its back feet and the whole under side was covered in blood. I couldnt believe it.The ammo did what it was suppose to do I guess. But just didnt do it very quick. The little gun is very accurate and I think I made good shots based on the blood I saw. However in a self defense situation good shots under stress may not be guaranteed either,(by me). It was enough for me to justify carrying the extra weight of a bigger caliber. Mobility vs Firepower. The sole purpose of the concealed carry (for me) is to have a tool that I hope never to have to use. But in the instance I did need to employ said tool, I need to know that is going to stop someone rather quickly. I think for many instances the little gun would be fine, but for a motivated attacker, or someone who maybe on dope the .380 is not what I want.

While I havn't killed anything with it yet, I still feel plenty confident in my Glock 30 carrying (11) .45 +P's and my spare 14 rnd mag on my weak side.
I'm glad you got to check out the .380 first hand in a "less" stressful situation Any chance you can find the coon and see the shot placement? I guess if you left it for dead, it's prob drug off an ate by now tho |

Come on man, raccoons =/= people. They are tough little critters, and please, if you are going to be killing them, take head shots or use more gun. Be humane. .380 is fine for a backup gun. If you think ANY pistol is going to drop an attacker instantly without CNS hits, you are in for a rude awakening. |

I will look for it tomorrow, but you are probably right something is bound to get it. I am debating what gun to get for CCW. Got a Glock 19, but may add something new If you already have a G-19, I would skip getting another gun and use that money for ammo and training. |
