There was a pretty good documentry on Animal Planet ch 282 on Direct TV tonight. It is about the population explosion in wild pigs. It is worth watching especially if you have an interest in hunting them but no real knowledge about them.

The show will air again on Sat. night 2:00am. Probably turn up again in a couple of weeks also.

So are the pigs mainly in low lying areas in Ar.?  Are any in north central? Where do razorback hogs hang out. And can you hunt hogs year-round in Ar.?
Sorry if this is a hijack. Just putting out feelers. Down here in Fl. pigs are a vemin and are afforded all the rights of that group

I've heard of them as far north as Batesville.

As far as I know, feral hogs are GTG all year round.

I wish there were more hogs around here, we have a few in places around Garland county, but very many.  I like a target rich environment.

The terrain kinda flattens from Batesville east and south, so I guess theres not many in the hills. Makes sense, what kind of fat pig would want to climb hills anyway.

only on private land are hogs GTG year-round

on public land, you are only GTG during a regular hunting season and only with a weapon that is legal for that season......so basically, during tree-rat season, yer up shit creek.

I caught the last part of the show last night.  The jist of the show was about how it looks like the feral pigs from here are somehow over time looking more and more like the huge hogs from Russia.  It's funny they could easily genetically test them but they didn't seem to mention that simple fact.  You know the show had to have drama.   They were trying to determine why so many hogs over here seem to look more and more like their cousins from Europe with the longer snout, etc  Crossbreeding from European ones released over here or just more of their ancient ancestry coming out?

Apparently years ago most hogs would almost always run from dogs chasing them but today many hogs will stand their ground.  That's a trait of their European cousins also.

Earlier in the show, the talked about DNA results being inconclusive or some shit like that. They did have a lot of footage showing the
$$$$$ worth of damage to land and crops. Also a bunch of hunting dogs that were killed by the pigs. They also showed a bunch of pics of more HOGZILLA like pigs that have been shot. Huge and mean. They think they are going to be a serious problem in many places soon. I expect there will be an open season on them most everywhere before long..

Here's a link to some short clips from that Discovery series:

Pig Bomb

I remember seeing alot of wild pig damage when I hunted with my BIL south of Stuttgart, well over a decade ago.  The brush at the field edges was overrun with pig tracks and their trails in the underbrush.  We didn't see any, but it made me want to have a revolver as a backup to my rifle, especially since my nephew was with me.

We were doing an evening hunt after killing ducks in the morning of course.

Gotta give the fly holes time to clear and let the flying fowl to come to rest.
