For the sake of argument, let us say that you like using gmail - but are disturbed that Google
stores everything in its database forever. So, you decide to use a program to encrypt your emails. PGP is (was) a pretty good choice, but GPG is probably a better choice. Both PGP and GPG offer Public Key cryptographic services as well as conventional. I won't go into why and when you might want Public Key cryptography vs conventional - there are plenty of resources on the web for that. At any rate, GPG is a command line application it can be a real chore to encrypt every email you send without some kind of helper application. Some email applications have that functionality built-in. For those that don't, there are apps like GPG Shell. As an example, I will highlight the test above, copy it to the clipboard with ctrl-c, and right-click on the GPG Shell icon in the windows system tray (bottom righthand corner), and select "Clipboard Encrypt". There a couple other buttons I need to click, enter a passphrase, and then I have this in the clipboard: ––––-BEGIN PGP MESSAGE––––- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (MingW32) - GPGshell v3.60 jA0EAwMC6o3hNdDOpUpgycEMI5r+kHsxf+ArVZS38f74TfKtUcdeWZUY5eiICcDb gH//tuIqwD2xgNWIfH+UVMiG01HfUZQDz0jgWOzEU6KCq+MUgAhMx0bfaKVCT/xQ xf8H/iDxP1w1nhKMu6VzgPWJMoyDZaHNmgG+BEnaEb3GlWEIxnkMYvTfstl8xHMd mmLxPfQDEYP/jHI+PI5hhV7BqCmXFCYoYLj3YmSF9LFUGx1WzBGZfCIqVYr6TRXJ MkYZIp7HOm4JKAopSCLbEE/tZdwq7p7wUxhfiFkFEpimcrAobOkW24+6FieX6i/6 PIkv+SMoW2UwuWCXd+SRmb6mQT/fKKb9cXbVULfKlNOXj0ItXLdzvmZZqEC0Wmgh 4nvgTGSWGp6O5kBi3hHueu/ri3htAL4rrrrQ9TKMucQC7ACnSPlOR1pMD4l7lmgY S7LQDfQm4mRtx28rUKBcxwKZqzcnw3CYrvZOI/C6OZ4xHuk9cwKISzyerO0FlNJh E+xn6K9wmkI7JtjqZIQnp+mxLULjDXXqcBxGmwMn5lxwyRNaPricmZdYHA0/dwzc zHcl5Bpwbb/MQ0C1AVOcJp6TgLoewBjOOh9CeNIM+22O10YWse3UUpc3m9pV2w== =xsR7 ––––-END PGP MESSAGE––––- To decrypt it, I follow basically the same process except select "Clipboard Decrypt".
