Hey guys,

I'm moving to Kansas (t-minus 10 days) and will be residing in the Wichita area. I checked out the range links at the top of the forum but most are dead. Sooooo what's the shooting like in Sedgwick county? Where's the best ranges? And who's gonna give the new guy a tour?

Wow, you're the second New Yorker from the forums to move here since November.

For indoor ranges in Wichita, you've got Bullet Stop and Bullseye. Bullet Stop is pistol only, but has a slightly nicer range in my opinion. Bullseye has a pistol range and a 100 yard indoor rifle range. Either place has an okay selection of rental guns as well.

Check out Thunderbird Tactical if you're looking to buy. They don't have a shooting range, but as the new guys in town they have fairly aggressive pricing on guns and accessories. Their ammo seems a bit high, however.

You'd think there would be a ton of outdoor places to shoot in Kansas, but surprisingly that's not the case unless you know someone with land or join a club. There's a public range at Cheney Lake that wasn't bad the last time I was there a few years ago.

Give the gang a shout over at the Kansas Concealed Carry forums and I'm sure someone there could point out a few more places for you.

There is a gun club in Hutchinson, called Central Kansas Gun Club. The wait to join can be over 2 years, so apply asap. It's 70 dollars a year I think. They have pistol, cowboy action, and shotgun ranges in addition to 100 yard, 200 yard, and 600 yard rifle ranges.

There is a place west of McPherson called The Outback Park. I think it's barely 100 yards, and you can't police your brass here, but they have lots of steel. They had 3 gun matches out there in the past, not sure if they still do. It's about an hour or so from Wichita.

East of McPerson about the same distance the other way is lake that has a free public 100 yard range. It's north of Canton about 7 miles. The particluar range is called the Don Brown memorial range. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the lake. Anyway, it's usually not too busy, so you can move forward and shoot pistols sometimes.

Cheney has been mentioned I think. They have a 25 yard pistol, and a 100 yard rifle range. I went there once, it was packed, I never went back.

Thats all I can think of, asside from the indoor ranges.

Welcome to Wichita

Are you a member of air capital, Gnarlyfeet? I'd like to check that place out.

I am not a member of air capital.

I have been trying to get into Sunflower for 3 years now with a sponsor.  I believe they only have spots for 140 members and rarely lose anyone.

Air capital always seems to have a table set up at the Chisholm trail gun shows.  According to the by-laws you have to have a sponsor.  They also host some kind of competition almost every weekend through the summer.  Because of that and the distant I would have to drive,  I have been reluctant to join.

The lake afton range charges $7 a day. The cheney range is decent but can be completely

packed unless you go early in the morning or on hot afternoons during the summer. Best option:

befriend a farmer. That way you might be able to hunt with them as well.

Afton charges now?

I thought they were free, but then they seemed to be closed for awhile.

ETA: shows what I know!

I have my own range on my 80 acres.  As was suggested above, befriend a farmer and you will have access to target practice and perhaps hunting ground.  Like my neighbors though, until I know you, I probably would be hesitent to allow strangers on my ground for liability reasons.
Also Maxwell Game Preserve has a free range if you want to travel to eastern McPherson Co.
