not far from Wichita.  Wichita has a great zoo, all the franchised restaurants you could want, and just about everything you could want, for a big little city.  Wichita State has some good baseball and basketball to watch if you can get into the smaller college ball.  We have a independent league baseball team with a nice stadium.  If you need a Cabelas we are about 3 hours from K.C.

Good places to hunt birds and deer around the area.    Several lakes and camping areas near Winfield.

ETA:  gun laws,  NFA items are good to go, KS NFA

My wife was born and raised in Winfield and we lived there for close to 15 years after we were married.  Now I cannot speak to the laws right now but at that time they were normal Kansas laws nothing against firearms but nothing really helping the firearms owner either.  Kansas does have a CCW law now which does help if you like to carry.  Powder Valley is also located about 5 miles east of town so you can get powder, bullets or primers (if they every get them in) if you reload.  I loved the town during hunting season because there was great Dove, Quail and Prairie Chicken hunting just outside the city limits.  There used to be a descent public 100 yard range on the south east side of Ark City but too but too many idiots that had to haul all their trash out and shoot it up then leave it caused it to go away.  If you like fishing there are several lakes close by that offer good bass and crappie fishing.

I live near Winfield, so I can answer most your questions....

Gun laws for the state are decent. We have CCW, NFA, and the Castle Doctrine. The sheriff is very pro-gun, and he will sign off on NFA forms.

There are no public ranges that I know of, there is a private range at Arkansas City 11 miles south. You must pay dues and be an NRA member, but it has a pistol range and a 200 yd rifle range. Cowley County has one of the largest, most likely the largest, NRA banquet in the state every year. A lot of 3 gun shooters, hunters, and long range rifle shooters in the area.

Good hunting and fishing, Kaw Wildlife Preserve is open to the public, so you can hunt there until you get to know some locals to hunt on. As for things to do, it is a small town in KS so not a lot. Indian casinos in Oklahoma or go to Wichita 45 miles north. Wichita is the states largest city, so it has a lot to offer, several large gun shows a year.

Anyone remember all those crazy nights at the "grove"? How about "S.A. bridge", or ITK?

One of the best parts of Winfield is Burger Station. Get yourself a bag full of them then drive 11 miles south to Arkansas City. Stop in Double Eagle Firearms. (620)442-HUNT. They have an excellent selection of firearms and usually have some hard to find ammo on the shelf. I found a couple boxes of .380 last time I was there. Ask to see the Squirrel.

Yes I agree.  By the time it gets to us the grease would be just right and we could belch them a long time after the fact, maybe two or three days.  However, I may get me one in about two months if I get to go back to visit my folks, I will just have to make about a fifty mile detour which will not be to bad.
