Looks like I'm going to Chitina this weekend.  Anybody been down?  How was it?  Looks like I missed the peak time already.  BTW this is my first time going.

A friend & I went last year for the first time, and are headed up on Wednesday  to get in line bright and early @ 5 am on Thursday.  Check out these guys:

They are great. They might be a tad spendy for a ferry service, however, the guide will place you according to your  experience on the river (he placed us on a fairly large flat out  cropping) and will show you where to place your net to increase your chances of catching your limit.  He checks on you 1-2 hours to see how you are doing, if you are no longer catching anything in your current spot he will move you to another where someone has already limited out.

Just called the charter company's hotline, the folks that the took out caught an average of 15 today and last night.
They believe that things are going to drop off over the weekend due to the rains up river.
No mention about the kings....if they are going to take away our 1, I hope they hold off a week before making that decision.

Thanks for the info.  I'll be happy if I catch just a few...  Not looking to limit out or anything

We went last weekend.  Some people were getting fish, but they worked all day at it.  Runs from the counter on the copper had not really made it in yet.  Should be bang up this weekend.

Had a good time but didn't catch anything but a tan and a good buzz...  Apparently the black nets are not the thing to use there.  Everybody all around us were pulling them in with the clear/whitish nets.  One of them was actually on dry land with his net 3 feet from the shore pulling them in.  Felt like an ass with all these people raking in the fish all around us.

Sure beat staying at the house.  Gonna try again soon hopefully.

Net color doesn't matter at all. I have been dipping up there for 20+ years. Location, location, location. Sounds like you were on the beach. Need to be in the canyon down on a eddy with slight back current.  Try it again in the canyon.

Until that day,

I agree with Darkop 110%.
It's all in the location.
We used black nets last year and caught our limit and are planning on using them again this year.

How do you explain everybody else pulling them in all around us???

Without seeing the location, we'd only be guessing the reason why you didn't get any.
But I'll take a stab in the dark.....
More than likely, those folks knew the lay of the river and knew where it slows down where the reds like to take a rest. In essence, they knew where the fishing holes were.

The spot that Hem had us fishing in was small little eddies on the down river side of a rock out cropping, and to add to that, the portion of the eddy that we put our nets in was moving up stream. So, just visualize the net pointing upstream, not down.

Please don't take the following the wrong way....
Think about the visibility of the Copper. You can't see much more than an inch or two at the most. If the fish can actually see, or care about a net, they are already in it by the time they can see it.

Too bad you didn't get a king....can't keep them any more.
Why couldn't they wait until Friday to make that decision?
