What are you intrested in seeing? If you want to do the tourist thing then Waikiki is the place to go maybe a luau or the polynesian cultural center. I would suggest you take a drive around the island stopping into Halaiwa on the north shore side and then making you way to the shrimp farm near Kahuku they have some good shimp plate lunches, from there you could go to the east side of the island to sandy beach. Along that cost line there is a couple of lookouts that you can take pictures at, then passing the one and only public rang we have here on the island of Oahu Hanama bay is a good place to go snorkling. Im sure my loco bradas will chime in also with some other things.

actually that was pretty helpful.

Also, is there a convenient way to get from one island to another?

The only way is to fly from island to island using Go Air, Ilsand Air, or Hawaiian Air. I would suggest you go over to the big island and drive down south toward the volcano national park, at the end of the park near the ocean you can hike down to where the lava enters the water, a very beautiful site especially at night. Along the way there are alot of places to stop and take in the view I know you would love it because my wifes family is from San Antonio and when they came to visit us a couple of years back they could not stop talking about it even till this day. Damn makes me wish I never left the big island, this island has a very relaxed feeling compaired to Oahu. Oahu is rat race of all the islands.

Also cool is to drive to the top of Mauna Kea, which is about 13,000 feet tall.  It's off-roading starting at about 8000 feet.  Pretty unique to be able to go from sea-level to 13,000 within about 3-4 hours.  The view is incredible, and during this time of year there is snow.  Yes.  Snow in Hawaii.

Rental car rates and lodging can be steep on the big island (especially for SUVs) but I use http://discounthawaiicarrental.com/    It may seem sketchy, but I've done 5 reservations through them and saved quite a lot of money.  Really quick responses too.
