Does anyone happen to know what restrictions we have on the use of tannerite here in AK? I have some stumps to move on a remote site I own and if I can do it without using permitted explosives, it would be good. Ive been poking around online and have not found it specificaly mentioned. Thanks! |

There are no specific laws for Tannerite itself, just the general laws pertaining to explosives. This would include the following for using Tannerite; 1) Tannerite must be mixed on site and once mixed, may not be sold or transported without a proper storage battery and license. 2) All created charges must be consumed or disposed of with 24 hours. It's the lack of selling and transporting that allows one to use Tannerite without a license. While Tannerite has plenty of explosive power, it would be somewhat difficult to use. You wouldn't be able to bury it under the stump as you wouldn't then be able to shoot it (easily). It works fine with a det cap but those are high explosives. Grinding down the stump seems to be the way of doing it these days, just got to rent the proper stump grinder or hire someone. If you have an explosives buddy, you could have him bring down the dynamite (which is cheaper than Tannerite) and do the job. I know as much about stump removal as all the explosives laws (as in not much at all really) so these are just some thoughts from a non-expert who uses Tannerite all the time, check the laws to be sure. Dan Tanner shows some stump removal in his instructional video he used to send with the Tannerite, and of course he has a full explosives factory and makes other products including a liquid explosive for stump removal. It's cool, he pours it in a ziplock baggy and spins it so it becomes an instant shape charge. You might even want to contact him for advice on the application or possible alternative products. My go-to explosives guy is in Fairbanks, he handles much of the AMGA shoots (dynamite, det cord, etc) and is a C3 dealer. IM me and I'll give you his contact info if you like. He may be a bit, um, wild. During one of the Anderson MG shoots he stuck a piece of dynamite in a teddybear and wrapped it's neck with det cord. We all stood in a line, each taking a turn shooting at the teddy bear with our pistols. One shot, then the next shooter. If we all missed, we had to take a LARGE step forward and go again. I don't think we were farther away than 15 or 20 feet when someone finally popped the bear. I was genuinely nervous at the end, to say the least, praying I or someone would hit it.

I happen to be the explosives buddy, Im a licensed blaster, just not in AK. Just to be sure, what is the source of your info? Wanna make sure Im not going to get into trouble. I can quote Hawaii blasting regs all day but I have only done demo on military bases herre....BTW, this is a remote site, stumping and grinding are very expensive, it's 18 mile from the nearest road. Thanks for the info.... |

Once again, I'm embarrassed because I used to have a high explosives license myself but it was brief. The info is what comes with the Tannerite and of course the Federal Regs. Don't rely on my info please. Dan Tanner is very knowledgeable about the Federal laws but my local explosives guy is who I would ask about state laws. I'll IM you his contact info. For those who know him, I am talking about Chris Mannino, C3. He puts on demo's all the time. As far as Tannerite, I don't see any problem, I and others use it all the time in various locations that are usually out of the city limits or at a range. In general, Alaska has no extra gun or explosives restrictions that I know about, still a free state here. |
