Were supposed to be getting cold here over the next week (Fairbanks)
Would skip the drive as car trouble at 30 or 40 below can get you into trouble really fast

A drive to Homer wouldnt be bad, Homer is pretty cool
Did you see the sheep on the hillside just outside (south) of Anchorage?

No, did not see the sheep. Am from NE Iowa and it regularly gets that cold in my area. Am confident I can travel prepared enough for the drive up that way. Just takes a little common sense and preparation. I rented some Chevy all wheel drive SUV thingy thats in good shape.

One small thing happens and all of a sudden you can be in a life or death struggle, though YMMV

I trip down to Homer is always good and we currently have nice snow in the hills and lots of eagles on the Spit.  THe Glenn Hwy is also a great trip.

One complaint though, not a moose to be seen the entire 4 hours, until I got back INTO Anchorage though.  Saw 2 milling around IN town  heh.

Aviator

Yep, they're in town.
Friday had a very large one hanging around at work.
Had my picture taken with my back to him standing 15 away.

P.S. Dont try this the next time you see one.

What to do? Depends on what you like.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I actually already have my pilots license, and talked to an FBO at Merril Field today about getting checked out in a 172. I may just go ahead and do that and fly up N if the WX looks decent this week one day.

Someone needs to take this young man around Anchorage and show him the sights.  Maybe buy him a beer at the Alaskan Bush Company.

Define Quality

BAC > AGE - Check
Teeth < Fingers - Check

Yep you can meet them all day long

Second Ave was the red light and rowdy district back in the hay day of the pipeline.  Not that way anymore, but you will see many of the drunks because the only two bars left in the area are on 2nd ave.

Better than him getting the idea that Anchorage is representative of the entire state...

Fairbanks is cool, literally and figuratively.  I prefer the peninsula myself though.

Made it to Fairbanks and North pole. Great drive. Only got down to -20 for a little bit. Got to town last night at 9pm or so and stayed at the Northern Lights Inn at the base there. Just now got back down to Anchorage.

Did a small side trip to try and get to the bus that Chandler kid croaked in.. I read that book in Afghanistan in Oct right before I left. Only was able to get about 10 miles or so down the side road that bus is on. Road ended and trail started and did not feel like the vehicle I was in was up to the trip. Did see a mess of Caribou along that road though. Stopped at a few nice restaurants along the way back to Anchorage.

Sounds like you enjoyed your trip and time with our -20 weather.
Very wise judgment on stopping at the trailhead when you did.

I think you have what it takes to make it here in Alaska.

Most people don't visit in the middle of freaking winter!

How are you going to go placer mining when the water's frozen?
