Last I heard the unemployment rate was so low that they were trying to import folk to work there...

It does in a major way.  They've basically used up all the available land.  I liked Juneau though.  Lived there for a summer.

Found memories of going into the Red Dog Saloon, but don't remember leaving...same with the old Alaskan Hotel.

The housing marked there does suck but we really loved living there and my wife may be getting a job with the TSA there.  A big attraction for us is that it is on the water.  We really love the ocean and boats and both used to work for Allen Marine there.  I have also worked for Kenai Fjords Tours and Prince William Sound Cruises and Tours and used to operate the boats on Crater Lake in OR so water is a big consideration for us.  The other place she applied for is Cordova so that is a possibility too.

yes hello i live in juneau 45+years,
now if you want or are coming to juneau better have a place ready to move into the housing REALLY sucks here.
rent is artotious and landlord are asses!!
thank god i  or the wife and i got out house when the market fell on its face years ago,  ITS COMING AGAIN
then there is the criminal legeslature in juneau and all housing is locked up when they are in town,so special session (still going) and legeslature will start up officially again in 3-4 mths-----
So unless you would like to live on a big boat ;ya better have some housing or somewhere to hang.
and if your single i would say buy a big used junker boat in juneau and when you do find a place dump it or help someone else out,ps NO CIT TAXES ON BOATS AS IN MILL RATES as on homes.
what taxes you do pay is wraped up in the 5% tax
check out juneauempire.com and see what juneau is all about bunch of F##@@%^%$$!! GREENIES they couldnt find there ass without help oh oh bantering again sorry!

LOL, AKwildman, I know what you are talking about when you mention all the greenies.  You should have seen the glares I got when I went hiking up behind Juneau with my Mini14.  Be even better now, I have an AR!

we would probably want to live in the mendenhall area or somewhere not too far from Auke lake since we would be either working at the airport or allen marine.  We won't be in a position to buy again for a couple years so that isn't really a worry.  rentals seem to be running about the same price as here from what we can see online.  It is a bit sickening how much of the land is tied up in the parks and forests so you can't use it or live remotely.

I imagine if I had lived here a few decades ago I would be even madder at what I see.  I moved to Alaska in 97 when I graduated from highschool in OR.  I have lived in remote parts of Alaska most of the time since and have only had running water and electricity for about 1/4-1/3 of the time I have lived in AK.  Since I have 3 kids now it's getting a little harder to live like that now though so we are moving to the water so we can get away from it all on a boat since I can't live all that remotely anymore.

I have lived in Kodiak, Ouzinkie, Katmai peninsula, Monk's lagoon, Seward, Whittier, Chugiak, Palmer, Wasilla, Juneau, Douglas Island, Akhiok  So although I can't claim many years in AK I can claim I have immersed myself in it's life and culture trying to become an Alaskan.

AKwildman, my email is [email protected]
phone is 622-8308

I don't really have any specific questions having lived there before myself, just seeing who is in the area, we get tired of not having any friends so I am trying to tie in closer with the AR shooting community since they are mostly folks I can get along with pretty well.

Also, we don't know for sure it is Juneau we are moving to.  If we could get a posting in Cordova that would be preferable since it is more of an Alaskan community.  I would say it's about a 75% chance we will be moving to Juneau this winter or spring.
