You need an Alaska address to maintain a Concealed Handgun Permit. When you move from Alaska, you are no longer an Alaska resident and are required to turn in your Concealed Handgun Permit. If you move back to Alaska before the permit expiries it will be returned to you. http://www.dps.state.ak.us/PermitsLicensing/achp/images/12-299a.PDF The NICS-EXEMPT is no longer available with the CHP. I hope this helps Ripak Be Safe Have Fun |

Class was 2 days. First day 8 hours of class time like what was stated above. What you can and can’t do. Second day was range (shooting) qualifications. About 4 hours, but it was winter so we shot to qualify with the option that if we didn’t qualify, we could come back at not extra charge to try and qualify the next weekend. I think it was 28 rounds fired for the Qualification part. The Requirements for the class I took are. Your carry handgun, extra mags are nice to have if you use an Auto. 100 rounds of ammo A holster outside of the waistband Eye protection Ear protection Cost for the class and the permit was about $350.00 I paided for the Nicks except and you cant get that now so I would say a little less than $350.00 ymmv. Best of luck Ripak Be Safe Have Fun Edit for spelling |

Thanks for the quick responses, but I have a few more questions: 1 - Who's Joe Nava? Contact info? 2 - I will be moving relativley soon, but continue to be an Alaska citizen (drivers license, voting, {not} paying taxes...). So you mean even if I'm still an AK citizen, if I'm living in another state (due to a military move) that license is no good? I will probably (read hopefully) be moving to Georgia (assuming my next base is in the U.S.), but could wind up in Arizona, Nevada or God-forbid Californa. Working on the A-10/U-2/Predator my options are pretty limited. |

Q1 Sorry I don't know Joe Nava. I live down by Anchorage. Q2 Your ok, as long as you maintain your Alaskan Residency. Go for it. It will open other doors for you that you may not have thought of yet. Ripak Be Safe Have Fun Edit to add Wait Q2 You have to have an address (abode) in alaska. Even if you move within Alaska you have 30 days to file a change of address. Being .Mil I'm not sure about this part. I cant state for sure about this. Edited once more. The point I am stuck on is that if you have a CHP and become “Homeless” you don’t have an abode but could still be an Alaska resident. You must have an abode to maintain the CHP. If they don’t make exceptions for .Mil, Do you have family or friends that you can use their address as your abode? |

I think that would be the best thing to do in this case. Please post what they have to say about this. Wishing you the best of luck. Thank You for Serving Our Country. Ripak Be Safe Have Fun Edit to add info Call (907) 269-0392. ask for Mina. She is in charge of the Alaska CHP division. She is the one you should talk with. |
| Well, I went to the State Tropers office in Fairbanks the other day. There were no Troopers around, and the secretary t the counter didnt know the answer or where to look. She gave me a phone # to call, said it was thier office in Anchorage. I havent gotten a chance to call yet. She also gave me a list of who teaches the classes here, there are a few. |
I took the CWP class from Joe Nava several years ago as did several of my friends and I enthusiastically recommend him as an instructor. Cost then (2001 or 2) was 100 dollars and ran two days at the indoor range on college road. http://www.aimcomm.org/mambo2/index.php?option=com_akostaff&Itemid=85 |

I took my first class with Joe Nava, and another outfit the first time. My permit is still NICS excempt BUWAHAHA! At least until 2008... First day was lecture about firearms and the laws, Joe Nava had a State Trooper come in and go over the laws. The second class I took ex-police Scott Carnahan did the honors. Each provided firearms. I think you had to put x amount of shots in the human sized target at 7 feet, then a lesser amount in the same target at 21 feet. Here's the funny: It doesn't matter if you shoot 100 rounds as long as you get x number of them in the target. A blind man could do this. A monkey randomly shooting could do this, given enough time. The skills portion is a JOKE. Joe Nava is NRA stuff all the way, he was on the board of directors if I remember correctly, he named the road he lives on "NRA LANE". His house is quaint. The original burned down taking many firearms with it so he is a big believer in fire rated safes now. The house is a small front room where we took the class, then it connects to his living room/kitchen/dining room, small bedroom off to the side, and another room full of racks of rifles. The rifle room is almost as large as all the other rooms. It's like he lives in a gun safe, heh. You usually see his and other instructor's ads in the newspaper under 129: Guns for Sale in the classifieds. They aren't always there because people like Joe book up solid for some time before they can take more people on. His daughter and son play a major part. Both classes served snacks (bonus!) Residency aside, the only states that honor Alaska's permit are: Alabama Updated: 2005-06-01 http://www.dps.state.ak.us/PermitsLicensing/achp/Reciprocity.asp (High confidence) Arizona Updated: Here is the link @ Packing that I used www.packing.org/state/alaska/#otherstatehonors Yep, Spooky but I like your list better Edit to add : My link only gets us to the Disclaimer page... Sorry |
|
In any case, packing.org is an awesome site, all the firearms and deadly weapons rules for all the states as well as reference material like the actual laws for the states, traveling rules/laws, CCW instructions, applications and forms, and more all in one place! They even update it! Gotta love that. |
