What are the Job prospects looking like up there in the great white north.

Depends what you do.  Anyone can find work here, Wal-Mart is always hiring.:).

Looking for anything in the 30k range, but stable employment.

Also what is the cost of living like?

Just kicking the tires right now.

While $30K might be okay for starters, that's not going to let you do much more than survive here unless you have other income.  Cost of living is high here, your going to need to attain a higher paying wage if you want any significant money for other than bills.
2/9/2005 2:27:51 AM EDT

So with Cost of living adjusted I guess it should be about 40 then.

What do/can you do?

How do you want to live?

Do you have a reliable car?

Lots of people work 2, 3 4 jobs to make ends meet.  Don't come north expecting to get a slope job and rake in money hand over fist.  Just doens't happen like that anymore.  Many people come north with dreams of riches, where else does the state pay you to live there?

Gas right now is just under $2.00 a gallon, decent housing in Fairbanks is pushing 1K a month anbd up for a rental, don't get me started about fuel oil if you have to pay your own heating.

You can do better than 30k, I got that while in college waiting tables full time.  Depending on your lifestyle, I'd be going for a good 40k or so if you're single to have a decent setup.  There are tons of $10/hr jobs up here you can get with zero skills, but to make any $ you need to have something.  What do you do?

I have some college behind me.

my brief resume:

About 2 1/2 years of college in general studies but heavy on Criminal Justice.

I worked for the Sate Of Maryland as a Corrections Officer.

And now I work for the county police department as a Booking Officer.  I pretty much babbysit the police station book prisoners that are brought into the station for charges and play nice nice with the general public.  I also get to run the guest through NCIC and other cool stuff till they see the Courts Commisioner.

So thats what I do

I also have a type of OCD thats great for clerical type stuff.

I'm a pretty hard worker and long hours are nothing new to me and I rather enjoy it.

Hell I'll even do one of them out in the middle of nowhere type jobs where there are no people around for miles and miles.

Are you interested in a LE job?  There are several village departments (North Slope, Bethel, Kotezbue, etc.) that are hiring right now.  There is pretty high turn over in these places for a few reasons, including racism, lack of activities, lack of city conditions, harsh enviroment, etc.
If this is something you are interested in shoot me an email and I can send you links of where to look for the jobs.  You might want to IM/Email Ed/Arctic Bear for his insight.
Good luck

Racism - I am assuming that you are white.  It varies from village to village, though there is often distrust and contempt due to your race.  I do not have first hand knowdelge of being a white LEO, but again I have heard that it varies from village to village.  There are several people who post in this forum that live/work in villages.  I have a buddy who spend a year in a med. size village.  They were often told who they were allowed to arrest and who they could not arrest.
Activities - Many of these remote locations don't have the same facilities that many of us are used to.  You can't just hop in the car and go catch a movie.  There are things to do, you just have to be willing to try new things, take opportunities as they present themselves, etc.  Like photography, hiking, hunting, cultural activities, you will have no problems.  Point being is you have to be proactive and get out and do things, they don't come to you.
City Conditions - Honey Pots are common enough said.  Depending on where you end up at, it may be better or worse.  Again, talking with someone who lives/works in remote Alaska will shed more light on this.
Harsh enviroment.  .  North of the Arctic Circle they will go months without the sun rising.  Not just reduced daylight, no daylight.

On the up side... It is what you make it.  I am actively trying to get on with a department up north.  It is a very good opportunity for me, and from all apperances, the department is top notch.

Again, I would be happy to share anything I can with you.
Feel free to email me

Well I am a cracker.  Most of what you wrote above I can deal with. What department are you looking at.

Do some of these dep. have web sites I can look at or do I have to visit a phone book.

-55 I wish it was that cold down here.  I love the cold.  The lack of city crap is more my style any way.

Thanks for the info.

AKMIKE would also be a good source to discuss remote living with.

Email sent on department question.

Now if I am able to make it over there, I'm going to have to find a way to get all my AR's there too.

I got to get around the big spot called Canada.

Fly them.  They can go as check luggage.  Even if you have to count it as an extra bag it will save you money.  You can also mail it through US mail or ship it through FEDEX/UPS to yourself.  Be aware though that UPS/FEDEX are a real pain in the ass up here atleast and we don't get to use ground services the way they are available in the lower 48.

Did you get my email?

Also saw that they (State of AK) were hiring correctional officers.  Don't know if that is of interest to you.

Saw 6 different agencies currently recruiting on a qucik scan of Northern and Western regions.

The military bases have gone to civilian LE on base recently.  My understanding is that there is a new round of hiring coming up.

Got your e-mail thanks.

I was looking through some of the adds

When I get off of work I'll search it abit more.

If/when I would like to drive up there kinda like a road trip of sorts but thats for later.

Also to give me an idea, what are the aglity test like for the LE and the Correction depts.  I'm active but don't count on me running a mile.  I'm more like the fast man in the slow group.

I missed placed it on one of the links you sent but the police dispatch looks good to get my foot in the door.

Problem is, there's just so much land to dump them on before they get eaten by animals.

Stay in the lower 48. I have been all over this state and to live a decent life you need to be earning 80,000 a year in Anchorage area, and more in remote villages becuase everything is so damn expensive. Cost of living is HIGH. I cannot stress that enough to you, very HIGH. Unless you have a college degree that is in demand that will pay you in excess of 80K a year. Stay in the lower 48. If you dont have children and a wife, then you could live comfortably for about 50K a year. My 2 cents.

+1 for checking out Ft Greely. They recently had some openings for DA (Dapartment of the Army) civilian police. They mainly run the gate to the main base, and write speeding tickets on base. But it's a job.

The North Slope Borough Police Department is always hiring.  Give them a telephone call and have an app sent your way.  If you want to see bush Alaska, then that you will do with the North Slope.  Understand that Alaska in no cheap to live in even with a good job.

Best of Luck

Actually, rent a cops cover the gate.
All the DA Cops do is tool around and write tickets that cost nothing because there is no magistrate.
Tickets that don't go on your record and don't cost money.
Yeah, I have had a few.  Pays well, federal service, good benefits.  Just got to put up with living in shit housing.

+1 but not for any of the reasons listed, more residents means a smaller cut of the PFD pie for me.
