... life in Alaska. I'm exploring options for where to be several years down the road, and am in the information gathering phase. Tell me about life in general in the Anchorage area. - What is housing like? - General cost of living? - Schools? - Communities? Anything someone frmo the lower 48 would need to know before making a decision to relocate. Thanx. |

Slow down there Brohawk, it is summer in Alaska and we are all outdoors. The Kings are running and there has been some nice weather around the state. If you plane on moving up here you will have to understand that there is a thing called "Alaska Time" and that it is not like time for those from outside. You will get many replys from people up here and there are many sites about Alaska. Check out two sites here one is realestate and the other is the Anckorage Daily News. Call if you need more. And by the way we all like to shoot up here including us cops. www.adn.com and www.alaskarealestate.com |

Perhaps some more specific questions would help. I keep coming back to this topic and simply don't know how to answer. Mainly because I don't know anything about SC and where you are coming from for a comparison. I'd say housing and cost of living in Anch. are really high, but who knows, maybe you are in an area that has even higher prices. Schools... Well we have them. I'm sure someone has some kind of national rating system and has done the legwork on this. Not me though. Communities... What is that? For the most part people leave each other alone up here. Don't move in to Fairview or Mountainview. |

Same here, I tried answering this perennial question several times before. Because the state is so unique, there is much to say, and I wore myself out writing it each time. I swore I was going to write it all out and can it so I could paste it each time. Once the archive search becomes functional, then I can link you to previous similar posts. Ever watch "Northern Exposure"? |

I was looking for anybody's general thoughts on life up there, whatever a person thinks is worth mentioning. Coastal SC is flat, swampy and hot. There is a significant segment of the population that seems to be, well, an underclass. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but that's the most polite way I can think of putting it. If I described it in more detail I'd probably have the PC thought police all over me. I don't care how much money someone makes or what they do for a living and I can hang with people from a wide spectrum of economic and educational situations as long as they're just plain decent folks. My personality type tends to be introverted. I have friends and socialize with them, but I also enjoy my solitude and like to be left alone much of the time. I like outdoors activities, but most of the year it's miserably hot down here. I grew up in northern PA, but I've lived in the south (Louisiana and SC) since 1982 and have never acclimated to the summers down here. I've heard a bit about your winters up there. We had winters in PA, but not quite like you guys get. Sometimes I miss it. Hope this sparks some comments... |

And as arcticbear said, it is summer in Alaska. The weather has actually been nice for at least 2 weeks straight. If you want an answer from us you sometimes have to wait till the sun goes down |
houseing is steep , really steep in some parts , jobs are hit and miss depending on what you do for a liviing ...schools are ok , (biased since i work for the district) . 2 new high school built in the last year and large scale renovations being done at 4 others , another one coming on line in sept of next year. most of the elementary schools are in good shape and clean . stya away from anything with the name view at the end of it ....It's nice here alot better than the liberal sissy way of life I left in Ohio .....Come on up but be prepaired for some sticker shock.....we even have walmart LOL
