Can someone help me find where I can buy a BigTail for a SBR?  Thanks for any help or advice.

Articbear,

What makes you think you NEED a pigtail gas tube for the SBR?  In both my Colt and Bushy 11.5"'s, they work fine with a standard gas tube.  One (the Colt) I put in a PRI Fat Boy gas tube to slow it down some and it does so nicely.  If you don't have problems with cycling then I recommend you don't change anything.  Normally it's only in the full auto's that get finicky enough to warrant such a device, and if it did I would recommend the Fat Boy instead because it's easy to replace.  With the Fat Boy (and I happen to have a used one ) you don't have to remove the barrel or front sight (which ever the pig tail does from what I understand).

I'm registering an SBR myself, in semi-auto, and plan to just go with a standard gas tube.  Is full auto in the future for your SBR?  Are we talking a length shorter than 10.5"?

Is the stamp for a SBR $200 or $5?  I have heard both.

The $5 stamp is for AOW's.  This comes up a lot for short barreled shotguns.  If the shotgun has NEVER (even for one second) EVER had a stock attached to it past, current, and future - then it's an AOW.  Basically you have to start off with a shotgun that comes from the manufacturer with only a pistol grip.  Makes for handy bear gun.  AOW's cover other things like penguns and others that don't have a stock, and is a catch all for what doesn't fall into the other standard catagories all of which are $200.

AOWs
All other weapons?
What if you got a AR in pistol configuration?  Then put a stock on it?

AOW = Any Other Weapon

Yes, if you take a pistol AR-15, then you stick a stock on it, it becomes a SBR.  Once it has become and SBR, it's an SBR forever even if you remove the stock.

If you take a pistol AR-15 and stick a foregrip on it - say a verticle grip - it then becomes an AOW and must likewise be registered as NFA, and forever AOW.

I think it's possible to return the firearm to non NFA status and have it removed from the NFA registry through the ATFE if you want it to become a non NFA piece again.

A good example is the neutered M11 semiautomatic pistol.  It can have no forward grip nor stock.  A Tec-9 cannot have a verticle grip attached.

There was a case where stocks were made available for Contender single shot pistols.  ATFE took it to court saying that attaching the stock made them SBR's.  I believe an exception was made for them but I'm not sure.  One can attach a stock to a semiautomatic M11, but then you have to add a 16"+ barrel when you do it or it becomes NFA.

A shotgun with pistol grip without a second grip unfortunately still falls under the AOW instead of just being a pistol.

This information is covered in the NFA FAQ

Sorry to get off topic Arcticbear.  Getting back to that - what kind of length are we talking about for your SBR?  Keep in mind I don't mean to imply that pig tails are crap or evil, I just think there are other options to consider first.  I have seen pig tails used to great effect.

Howdy,

I have a 10.5 inch barrel, in .223.  It is stripping and firing the first round without problems.  The first shell is not cooling of before the second round is being picked up and cycled forward.  Thus we have a timing problem.  The only fix that I know of is the Pigtail, the hole on the barrel has to be large enough or it would not cycle the bolt and pick up the next round.  I just need to slow things down so the shell can cool enough to extract properly.  What are the fixes and where can I but?get them from?

Okay, first let me say that I will say gas pressure as opposed to cooling as that is the common verbage.  It's not temperature that's keeping the shell in the chamber but the high pressures though technically pressure and temperature are the same things.

Since your second round is being stripped and fed were it not for the failure to extract, you have plenty of gas for operation as you have noted.

In anycase, timing is not the first isssue, your extractor is failing because either it's weak or the gas pressure is still too high for it to handle.  Messing with the timing may cause other problems, best to try and improve your extractor first before anything else.

Before you think pigtail, be SURE that you are using a heavy duty extractor spring.  In newer Colts, these are denoted by the use of black spring polymer inserts.  Colt as well as others have or should have gone to heavy duty springs (some even use SAW springs from what I understand).  Even better - get a Wolff x-tra power extractor spring.  If you still have failure to extract, then add an o-ring device like the crane mod or D-Fender.  I try not to use both as sometimes it makes the first round difficult to fully chamber and get under the extractor in the first place.  If you are already using a heavy duty extractor spring, then you should go to the next level.

If I had to change the gas tube, I would use the PRI Fat Boy since they are easy to replace like a normal gas tube.  With the pigtail, if I remember correctly (but I don't know for sure), you are either going to have to remove your barrel and assy or remove the front sight base to get it on.  You may also have to open up your gas port but that is not always the case.  Also, no more than 40 rounds fired per minute is recommended with the pig tail.  I believe them to be more susceptable to heat failure than the PRI Fat Boy.  Pigtail failures are usually noted as sagging and losing shape.  Another option is the LMT advanced carrier which also increases gas dwell time and is an easy drop in.

Look at this Shorty Cycling Thread and study those pages, in particular MSTN's comments as they know what they are doing and have a lot of experience.

If you are going to be in Barrow, I can bring a used PRI Gas Boy and an LMT Carrier if you would like to try those out first.

Iwould like much if you brought a  PRI Gas Boy and a LMT Carrier.  Please let me know what you want for them.

Well the Fat Boy I had to remove for unknown reasons, and so it may not be 100% but it looks that way.  The LMT Carrier I am using in a 14.5".  I am still using a Fat Boy in a 11.5".

No cost, but I was going to bring them and you can try them out at your leisure and see if either works for you.  I will also bring a Wolff extractor spring, D-Fender and Crane o-rings.  If any of this solves your problems, then you know what to get (if the Fat Boy works for you then you can take that one off of me - barely used).  If nothing is working, then you can try the pig tail.  Be back Thursday the 10th.
