Interesting prototype AKM type rifle with milled receiver & rail.  Milled AR15 lowers.

I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish.

Met them at the show this weekend. Nice guys. Lowers look good.

They had billet lowers, machine marks are visible, uncoated, for $150. I think they should produce flatside uppers with the same machine marks. it would make a badass matched set.

Their AK looked good. It'll be interesting to see the final product. The proto is heavy but I was assured it was fully operational.  Said it'll be about 3 months before it is finalized.

I'm interested to see what they'll bring.

Yes we are real and we are in process of designing and manufacturing our own proprietary AK variant.  We have 4 CNC machining centers, dedicated staff of avid hunters and shooters along with one of the top gun smiths in the USA as a consultant.   Currently we have shot our prototype guns and today we have our final modified design in one of our mills so we can go do more testing and approve the gun for production.

We want to offer exceptional service and customer experiences that our not found in most products.

We have a Class 7 FFL with type II SOT and are ITAR registered.

We also have a consulting active special forces member and have 3 military vets working on this (real employees that are here)

To get some feedback we did have a booth at the Fairgrounds gun show and we did make a limited run of AR-15 lower receivers (not my idea by the way, my opinion is that the AR market is saturated but we have the Howie and Dan models available if any one wants a receiver) our receivers are dimensionally very accurate and made from 7075 Aluminum

Soon you will be able to buy some of our items at Brownells

We have and do collaborate with CCA on some projects

I have been playing with guns since I was a little kid and I come from a gun family (I'm third generation gun nut, My dad is avid shooter and past President of the Des Moines Isaac Walton league and we have 2 private ranges for testing). We have spent more than $100k on R&D on this variant and not to seem arrogant this revision is BAD ASS.

I am also not a web form person so you will not see me much online.  We are not big self promoters and we try to let the product speak for itself....  So feel free to contact us about a demo shoot in the future...

Thank you for talking about us!

Thanks for posting Bob!  If I can make it to the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum meeting on Monday night (dad will have to give me a ride) I'll talk to you some more about your products as we didn't get much time to talk when my wife and I seen you at the Waterfront restaurant in Ankeny earlier this month.  Good luck with everything!

What does the part in red mean? Kind of a vague wording on your part. Dimensionally very accurate meaning...?

I don't know what he ment but I have bought 3 lowers from them all I can chime in is they fit tight to most uppers. Dpms,Brownells, PSA, sun devil . Only thing I have noticed is they do not like to fit pmags well pmags are a very tight fit but I believe they have corrected this issue with the newest model lower they are making with that being said keep me in mind if you get some blems on the newest lower your making I am interested thanks !

On the first units we were a little tight on everything by about .0015".  We assembled some lowers today and other than some crap in the holes from the annodizer (always happens) they went right together in less than 10 minutes..  Our last batch is on the money with the Dimensions and we fishmouthed the magwell for speed changes.  I have about 20-30 test mags and all the good ones fit fine (Colt, Brownells, Magpul) there are some junk ones that I do not think fit anything right.

FYI I have a Colt the Magpul mags don't fit good in too. Additionally Daniel Defense Uppers don't fit on my Colt either ( tried 3 different ones).  I have also had to ream most of the upper I have assembled to .250 or .251 to get them to fit really nice..

It means our CNC's are very accurate, this is not our first time building parts and since we are avid shooters and collectors we have assembled some junk parts.  In fact I have a drawer full of junk safety's and pins that are completely out of specification.  Our guns do not rattle and fit tight.  Most of our dimensions are falling within +/- .001 if you CMM them, most other company's are +/- .003"

So what I meant is we try our darnest to build the best parts period and they are very dimensionally accurate to critical dimensions.

Go assemble 50 AR's and then tell me your thoughts on other manufactures parts.

Right now with current production parts I would say the Daniel Defense has about the most accurate parts on the market, our lowers fit there uppers perfectly.  Today we built M4's with parts from Midwest Ind, they all went together easy, three guys built them in under 30 min.

We WILL be at the gun show this weekend (11/29-11/31) with some of our ar-15 lowers and complete guns as well.  Also on display will be a Saiga 20 deer shotgun that utilizes our rail mounting system. This will be field tested next week (Iowa's first shotgun season) Can't wait to see everyone there!

Pretty cool looking AK Variant

I see there's a Magpul BUS on the front, where is the rear sight at?  Are you planning on a Dust cover mounted rear sight? or will the rear sight have the same placement as most AKs?

Nice work.
12/7/2013 4:09:08 PM EDT
[#25]
Thank you!

Our production ak will have an integrated rail system, which will act as the dust cover.  As you probably know most ak dust covers are pretty shaky.  We redesigned our weapon to be attached via hinge to the trunnion,  and incorporates a fastener to the receiver.

Pics as promised, if a little late.

You can tell some aviation nerds work there:

The interior offices aren't quite finished yet in the new building, but there are a lot of cool touches.  The barn doors on all the offices have hardware that was made in-house on the CNC mill.

Blocks of billet waiting to become AR15 lowers:

Some lowers in the CNC mill at various stages of completion:

Close-up of one of the partially finished lowers:

Finished lower after anodize:

That stuff out of the way, the really interesting thing they have going on is the ARK, which is a AK-like platform.  Honestly not a lot of AK parts in it, all told... they are using a modified BCG, almost everything else is made in-house or is made to work with AR15 components.  The FCG in particular is AR-15.

Here are some of the prototypes, with the production version upper-left in black anodize:

You can see the design developing, older designs on the bottom and newer designs towards the top.  It started out as "just" a milled AK lower compatible with AK FCG/grip and then the AR-15 FCG/grip were added on later.

A production ARK lower in black anodize:

They are making their own dust cover with integral rail.  The one pictured is a 3D printed rapid prototype made out of plastic. The lockup on the production aluminum part is supposed to be very tight and suitable for optics:

The barrel in that pic was turned from a green mountain blank on site.  They use a CNC lathe to time the threads so they can lock up the same way every time.

A partially finished dust cover in the CNC mill:

Shown with the BCG in place, note the hole where the charging handle should be - this will facilitate various charging handle designs:

Note that the AR buffer tube is positioned so that you can use AR height irons and optics.

With a prototype dust cover in place:

The ARK fore end starts life as an extrusion (like a lot of AR free float fore ends do) and is machined to the final spec.  This pic shows a partially-finished fore end mocked up:

Not pictured are some other components they are making in-house on the CNC, among them the gas block, gas tube, trunnion, and mag catch.

These guys have some other cool stuff around the shop.  The firearms manufacturing side of things is very recent, their bread and butter is making electronic control systems.  Here is a side-project Bob's team is working on, a shop bike:

I thought the gas tank was an off the shelf part, but they actually made that in house.

Pretty cool stuff going on, I look forward to getting my hands on a production ARK!
