I went to renew my 2010 permit and I didn't know about the new 30 days before it expires thing.

So now I am considered a new applicant they said and I can either bring back my 2010 certificate or take another 4 hours of torture.

Any advice on classes that aren't as painful as the CAPS class? Hopefully I can find my old certificate or get a duplicate and avoid it.

i know some people if you really want to learn some shooting skill.  if you're wanting a certificate and little more instead, there are a ton of courses available locally that'll fill the bill.

Did you check to see if your Sheriff's office kept a copy?  I know ours' keeps a copy of each certificate.  With it being that recent, I would think you would stand a better chance.

I am sure they made a copy of it, but that would make too much sense. I will give them a call to find out. I'll call the caps guy and see if he can make me a new one too.

I want to take an advanced pistol class, maybe a rifle class, next year. I am looking to fill the minimum requirements this time around. I shoot pistols once a month down in winterset.

I figured is post up and see if you guys have found a class geared towards the non newby.

I don't know who Spetic is talking about... but if you want to just get a new certificate for renewal I'd say go this route CVFT

sign up, finish the course, he'll mail the certificate, go see the sheriff... do it all in your undies.

except the see the sheriff part

I would suggest taking one of the CCA classes this spring, even if you go ahead and renew before then.  Their Basic Handgun is definitely not boring.

I would suggest you go to the Iowa Firearms Coalition website. There are a number of very good trainers there that are a part of the movement for 2a rights and not just $$$$. Since you are looking for a quick one then the CVFT suggestion above is probably your best bet. Jason has a good course from what I have heard off the IFC site. He is also a member there.

I ended up finding my original certificate from 2008 while I was searching for my golfball launcher so I guess I dodged that bullet. They say they will mail it out in 30 days..

Now I can spend that money on something more fun. Like ammo, or another class.

That online one looks interesting. I like that they give you tests.

Thanks for the advice.
