My area got a several more inches of snow than expected. Under the assumption that only 1" was going to fall, I ventured out in the evening to Pella. By the time I was done with my errands, I discovered that the blizzard had decided to come further south. Travel was not advised and a tow ban in place. I'm from western NY, part of the snowbelt. I have seen the lake effect put 10 feet on the ground and yet Saturday night was some of the worst weather I've ever driven in. |

Here's a few pics from our winter adventure this weekend up near Cresco Iowa. We were deer hunting but the weather won. We all were going to leave Sunday afternoon but couldn't till Monday when the plow finally cleared the road http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/ford_shooter/022.jpg The drift across the lane was about 5ft deep by about 200 feet long down the lane. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/ford_shooter/029-1.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/ford_shooter/038.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/ford_shooter/047.jpg WOW! You guys took it hard!! |

I spent all day sunday towing (Ca-ching!).
Never ceases to amaze me how stupid people are-surprised no one froze to death after getting stranded.Visibility was zero, and people still attempted to drive, and then weren't prepared when they went in the ditch. I'm southwest of Fort Dodge and also originall from western NY (near Albion). We used to get a ton of lake effect, but never had the winds. |

I heard a blurb on the radio yesterday mentioning 6 weather related deaths but didn't hear any details on whether they were strandings or other issues(like freezing after a furnace failed). I'm in Alta Vista, don't know what the total was but I shoveled 3-5 inches around 3:30 Saturday afternoon and had a lot more to shovel Sunday morning. Too much drifting at that point to know what was new and what had blown back in. |

Yeah, one of the guys I pulled out was an old man in his 70's.Decided to drive about 12 miles to visit a friend in another town saturday night.Made it about halfway before he decided to turn back.Got stuck and called 911.Cop in the town he was heading to went to try and find him (4x4 police vehicle) and put it in the ditch.
They ended up being rescued by a local farmer that put up 5 people that night. They said when they got the 70 yr old out of the car he was incoherent. The heater was going, but it couldn't keep up.The car was full of snow-doors and windows closed, but the wind was forcing the snow in around the door seals.I doubt he would have made it thru the night. I get so irritated at people that go in the ditch for stupid crap in shitty weather-going for coffee, going for cigs, going to a friends,etc...free lecture with every tow is my motto. When you go out in the bad weather, you put other peoples lives in jeapordy-not just your own. I'm not big on more laws or expanding police powers, but I think they should ticket the hell out of you if you are out in bad weather for no good reason! And I know I shouldn't complain since I'm making money off their stupidity, but it still irks me. |

I live 13mi north of Algona in the NC part of the state, I don't know how much snow we got, but Rinstead, which is about 12mi from us got 10". The bad thing is all the snow blew into the yard and now we have as much snow drifted up in the yard as we had at the end of last winter, not looking good for the remainder of the year.
I saw a clip on the DM news about a house in Newell, the homeowners were away and the storm blew the front door open and when the neighbors checked on the house the next day it was full of snow. From the pictures they showed that place was a mess, but the neighbors were nice enough to clean up the snow before the homeowners returned. |

Several years ago I found a car abandoned in the ditch during one of, if not the worst, storms I've ever been out in. The driver couldn't have been gone long, he left the window down on the car. A couple hours later we get a call to a farmhouse in the area. The family found this guy walking in zero visibility, wearing no coat gloves or hat. Now remember this was one of those storms they'd been predicting for a couple days. Turns out he was a trauma surgeon. Lots of good that college degree did him. It took us an hour to get to the house, and I still had to throw his ass over my shoulder and carry him out to the ambulance. He ended up with frostbite on both hands. I guess it's true, you can't fix stupid, even with a doctorate degree, We call it "job security." |

Truth of the matter is sometimes extreme cold can make you goofy like extreme heat....higher education or not it will mess you up......as for as the weather, well I flew out for Vegas (work not for fun) for the week and am now back home.
Started to wonder if we were going to get stuck here....but alas instead of snow I saw lots and lots of desert. So, I guess I missed this one.....I am sure I will be lucky enough to work the rest of them though. Romper |
