I've looked and haven't found an answer to the question:
Will a person who already has a CCW be"grandfathered"for the first five year period or do they have to test prior to 01-03-2011?

no grandfathering...  however, you need to mention that you had a permit prior so your fee is $25 for five years instead of $50 for a first time permit issuance.

So I have to test under the new system even though my permit expires Junesomething 2011 if I want to be carrying in January?

Are you current enlistment or prior service? That is an automatic in the door the first time.

As far as I understand your old permit is valid until the expiration date no matter if the new law is in effect or not.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but in my carry class I was told that my permit is valid until the expiration date no matter what, even if you move out of county,  unless revoked.

I know mine does not expire until April and leaves me plenty of time to apply for my new permit once the new law kicks in.

the above is true.  your current permit doesn't magicly expire on 1-1-2011.  i was regarding the premise of renewals AFTER 1-1-2011.  and much like river rat mentioned there are a list of handy things that give you automatic qualification.  i suggest visiting iowacarry.org for that type of information.  no sense in duplicating it here...

Mine expires in late October.

Please correct me if I am in error, but it is my understanding as well that a person's current permit does not expire, BUT any restrictions are still on the permit unless/until they obtain the 5 yr permit.

not certain on that one, but i'm guessing that is right.  if you operate on THE permit in your wallet, you're operating on what IT says.  so if it contains restrictions, you are to adhere to them.  if you don't want them 1-1-2011, get a renewal with the new permit issuance.

if you have poor eye sight and have a restriction on your license requiring you to wear corrective lenses and you wear contacts fine...  if you get lasik surgery and your eyes are restored, your license still holds a restriction the day you go home from surgery...  some could argue you're still bound to show corrective eyewear.  thus, you get retested at the DOT and get a new license...  same logic here.
