i live in eastern iowa (cedar rapids to be exact), and was wondering if anyone knew of a range around here more than 200 yards.

Is it true, are you really blind?

There is a tacked thread near the top of the Iowa Hometown forum filled to the gills with information about ranges in Iowa.

Good luck.

Welcome blindman45 to the IA HTF,  I see you only have 26 posts so far on ARFcom so be sure and check out the tacked topics at the top of our Forum and if they can't answer any of your questions feel free to ask.  Live and learn I say...now cavscouty was that so hard to do?

I always hear about the guys on the East side of the State talking about the Princeton range but I don't know if it reaches out that far or not.  Good luck!

My bad, I'm a little worked up after planning, organizing, and making an SOP for my new ORG.
Anyway, I've been to Princeton many times when I lived in the Quads.  It is a lot better now that the have it cleaned up.  There is even a guy, I think he might be a volunteer, that hangs out there and makes sure things are going smoothly.  The berm is at about 90-95 meters from the benches.

Linn County has Matsell Bridge. Take couny home road east from the landfill North of CR for about 10 miles and turn left at the sign. Then it gets a little tricky.
•Shooting Ranges with a new 50 yd. pistol range, 100 yd. range, and 200 yd. range. They also have a trap range. Very nice facilities. There is a map on the bottom of this page.

Matsell Bridge

Best of all its free but I always drop a few bucks in the donation box.

WOW I must be blind. I did not see the MORE than 200 yds. Nevermind its late and I was tired.

Matsell Bridge is my range of choice. Is that new ranger they're building the 200 yd range?

Green Castle south of town is only 100 yds if I recall correctly. I don't like going there, though. DNR guy once criticized me for standing instead of sitting. He said something like, "What if you lost control of your muzzle?"

Other than those two, there aren't any public ranges to go to, especially one with more than 200 yds. Izaak Walton on 42nd St might have a range that long.

matsell bridge is a nice place - i highly recommend it.  they've done quite a bit to it over recent years and added a lot of stuff.  if you want something more private the ikes in anamosa is first rate.  brand new everything!!!  a friend of mine built it.  10+ benches and covered shelter house.  100, 200, and 300 yard berms, etc.  really nice place.

ya i ususally use matsells bridge and use to use north linn fish and game club a few years ago. i was just trying to find a place that i could see where my rifle is sitting at over 200 yards. going to texas this winter to deer hunt and the land i hunt is really open down there. and yes im blind lol, just in my right eye though, shot with a bb gun when i was little and friends started calling me blindman and the name just kinda stuck

I'm pretty sure 3rd Ave SE is much longer than that and no one over there is likely to notice a few more gunshots....

Anything past 200 is a rare duck in Iowa.  Van Meter goes to 600.  I believe there is a range by Pella that may go that far, its a bench rest club I think.

Milan, Illinois goes 600 but you need to be a member.  There's a 1000 yard range at Rivoli, Illinois.

Nothing in CR goes that far, last time I was at Matsells it was 200; but its been a while.  Princeton is only 100.  Oak Hills by Davenport I think is only 200.

I just moved from the SE side. I was grabbing my gun to many times from all the crap going on down there. About 6 months ago someone fired off about 20 rounds 7.62x39 just 2 blocks from my house.

lol yeah your right. i probably could get a way with it, $20 says no one calls the cops about me shooting my gun down the street. problem is when i turn my back, they might steal my target lol

Easy solution is to surround the target with basketballs. That should give you plenty of time to retrieve your target.

I work downtown in the 200 block of 3rd Ave SE (I'm at work right now, coincidentally). I park my truck in the 3rd Ave parkade. On May 18th, my truck was broken into. Stolen was my laptop, camcorder, stereo, and a few hundred dollars worth of school stuff. Not stolen were things like my expensive radar detector and 3 guns I had in the back. I called 911 and got transferred to voice mail. I flagged down a cop who I later found out was on his way to a sword fight (no joke).

People occasionally get mugged around here at night. I usually have to walk back to the parkade at 11 alone. Hopefully, I won't have any problems getting a permit in April...

I would never leave my guns in my car while parked in a parkade. Let alone all that other stuff.

i would never leave my guns in my car anywhere. if i want to go to walmart on my way home from the range, ill go home and drop em off first. unless i have my black powder gun...if they wanna steal that, id love to see someone rob a bank with that lol

a sword fight? what? ive seen some strange things in my life but cant say ive ever had someone get in my face and challenge me to a sword fight.

the 300 yard spot is the ikes on the south end of town.  the matsells bridge range is public and is west of anamosa.

There is the "Iowa 1,000 Yard Benchrest Association" in Pella

Looks like they are having a National competion on Sep. 19th
