Hi, I'll be visiting Iowa in a few months and was considering bringing a Glock along on the visit.
I started reading some of Iowa's gun laws on the net, and read a post below too. I'm beginning to think the Glock's not coming with. I have a CCW in Az, but apparently Iowa doesn't recognize out of state permits. Doesn't sound as though open carry is an option either. Can anyone here offer any advice? Thanks! |

we're working on changing that portion of iowa code currently. still, it sucks. obide by the law and work your ass off to change it is my motto.
as far as bringing it? why not? there will be something going on i'm sure. check back from time to time, as we all hold little events here and there over the year. it might just fall when you're in town. you never know. |

Well, my intent was to carry it so I guess it stays home.
I have to say I was surprised that Iowa gun laws are so strict. With it being such a wide open state and lots of hunting, etc, I figured the laws would've been much more laxed. Mainly Republican up there too, right? Thanks for the responses...and c ya soon! |

If you want to bring it just to carry it then leave it at home. No law that says you can't transport it in your vehicle or keep it in your hotel room though. In a hotel room no problem, but be aware that Iowa has very restrictive laws on how firearms must be transported. Unlike down here where I can have a locked and loaded AR15 sitting right out in the open on the seat of my truck, in Iowa it can't be in the passenger compartment and its got to be unloaded with the ammo stored separately. Down here we've got to keep handguns out of "plain sight", but we can have them loaded in our vehicles. Not in Iowa unless you've got an Iowa carry license. |

How do I insert the little guy banging his head into the wall. I'm sorry but your state's laws don't mean much in the IA hometown discussion.. Bringing it up in this discussion only adds confusion. On top of that (while with totally good intentions obvious) you spread misinformation. So please..... everybody..... unless you know what the heck you are talking about do not try to give legal advice on these types of issues. |

As for why I mention other state's laws, its to compare and contrast, because the other guy is from AZ. They are an open carry state with much more sensible gun laws in some ways even than TX. Unless they recently repealed the following, I'm not sure what you think I said is wrong... "483A.36 Manner of conveyance. No person, except as permitted by law, shall have or carry a gun in or on a vehicle on a public highway, unless the gun is taken down or totally contained in a securely fastened case, and its barrels and magazines are unloaded." Perhaps I wasn't clear when I said it couldn't be in the passenger compartment –– I meant uncased and loaded it can't. And such restrictions might come as a surprise to people who are used to being able to ride around with loaded firearms in their truck all the time. |
| DNR have checked us out many times with my mini 14 broken in two pieces sitting in the front seat with a couple 20 rnd clips full and a loaded pistol sitting in the dash (in the case)...but thats small town, rural iowa. I wouldn't push your luck in more populated areas. |

Agreed if your in the bigger county's like Linn county or Johnson county that stuff wouldn't fly and you either get your weapon's taken away or you get a big fine |

Hey guys, thanks again for all the replies. It's going to be a fairly short trip, so that, combined with some pretty strict gun laws that I'm not accustomed to made me decide to leave the Glock at home.
Az laws are great. I cary damn near everywhere I go. Do you guys have the Castle Doctrine up there? azjeeper |

Some counties are extremely liberal –– Johnson and Story in particular, and to a only slightly lesser extent in Polk, Linn and the other larger populated counties. A friend of mine almost got charged with assault because he held a burglar at gunpoint with an FAL until the cops showed up. The burglar was armed and had kicked in the door to my friend's apartment and then told the cops that he would have killed my friend, except he "couldn't draw down on no machine gun". The Story County DA only dropped the charges when he found out the burglar was wanted in FL for 2nd degree murder and since he had to be extradited wouldn't be able to testify against my friend. Anyway, you're basically considered to have a "duty to retreat" up there, so if you try to defend yourself expect to go to the grand jury. And liberal rags like the Locust St. Liar and at least the DSM market TV stations like WHO and KCCI will almost surely make you out to be the bad guy, especially if you use a firearm... And my family wonders why I haven't been back up there to visit... |
