What are you opinions on Aimpoints (CompM2 or CompML2 2x)with and without 2X magnification.  I have a new toy that requires a sighting system and I've been looking at Aimpoints.  My shooting is mostly at a local range from 50 to 100 yards (maximum for this range).  No house clearings.

Also interested in other red dot optics you may have tried and worked.

I have been using Aimpoint sights for several years and have never had any problems.  I currently have a CompM2 mounted on a M4 clone that I built and found it to be accurate on man-sized targets well beyond 100 yards.  The 4 MOA dot can be a little big at longer ranges depending on the target size.   It is awesome when used with a NV device.

I don't have as much experience with the EOTech sights but I think they are equally well made with more than acceptable accuracy.  Completely different reticle than the Aimpoint.

I have never used a magnifier with either so I can't comment on that.

It will probably boil down to your personal preference between the two.  Which ever one you pick you won't be disappointed.

I have an ML3 2 MOA Aimpoint and an Eotech 512. Have had the Eo for between 2-3 yrs and the Aimpoint for a bit over a yr. I think I am a bit faster with the Eo but not by much. I think it has to do with the natural centering effect of the reticle. A consistent cheek weld isn't necessary with either due to the no parallax reticles which isn't necessarily good for a novice learning form. Not necessarily you just a general statement.

As far as battery life goes the newer version Aimpoints win hands down. 50,000 hrs and up wins period.

The Eo doesn't need any other means to attach to your toy for a centered co-witness or a short riser for a lower 1/3rd co-witness. The Aimpoint needs a dedicated ring or mount adding an additional $80+ depending on how you go. Mine is in an ARMS cantlevered mount that I got for a decent price on the EE.

I could get by quite well with either one.

i just tried an aimpoint after using EoTech only for years.  i just ordered three 512s for myself as a result.

the aimpoint is fine and does exactly as advertised, but the my vision is knoced back a bit as the EoTech is more "open" and tends to allow more viewing between the tunnel and your peripherals.  granted, the EoTech battery life isn't as great, but who cares about putting AAs in once a year or more- also, if you need some batts every gas station in America has them on the spur of the moment...  if i were in a firefight and they went out, i'd be miffed, but i'm not.  besides, the thing starts to blink for hours prior to let you know they need replaced.  i have an N model unit (511) that i decided to never replace the batteries in because i got shitass tired of putting new batts in and them beginning to blink in two hours.  that was two years ago and they still blink when started up and work fine.  i would guess there are between 40 and 50 hours on them since they started blinking and the reticle still lights.

i have my back up irons cowitnessed to the EoTech on most of my rigs and i really like them.

i also like the 1MOA dot and 65MOA circle on the EoTech.

the aimpoint is a fine unit, but the EoTech suits me better.

hope this helps.

by the way, i've come across something of a bargain on 512s, let me know if i can help.

GSS,

I'll say right up front that I have no practical experience with the Eotechs, have just fondled them a few times at training.

I put an Aimpoint on my duty rifle a couple years ago. This rifle gets banged around pretty good, serves as my duty long gun and my entry weapon. In November I used it for my rifle instructor re-cert for the first time. (We only re-cert every 3 years). This entails shooting our 100 yard qualifications, as well as shooting CQB courses and the military pop up course which goes out to 300 meters. I had been a little concerned how it would do on the 300 meter targets.

Turns out my concerns were unfounded. I shot through that pop up course 3 times (because I could and it's fun, I got an acceptable score the first time). I only missed one of the 300 meter targets. I'd just put the red dot on it, squeeze the trigger and down it would go. Now admittedly the red dot covered most of the target at that distance, but I could still see it.

When we shot the 100 yard qualification course I shot through it once using the Aimpoint, and once using the BUIS. It turns out I shot a better score using the BUIS than the Aimpoint. I think what happened was that due to my aging eyesight I tended to concentrate more on the irons, and relaxed a little too much when shooting the Aimpoint.

When we shot the CQB courses I used the Aimpoint exclusively. One course was a speed course where we had seven pop-ups at distances from 7 to 35 yards. The goal was to get them all down in the shortest time. I’m glad to say I held up the end for the old guys and had the quickest time. I'm pretty sure the Aimpoint had a lot to do with that. It allows you to keep both eyes open and acquire the targets quicker. I think that probably applies to all the red dot sights. There were other instructors using Eotechs, they worked fine for them

Septic referred to being able to see better with his Eotech. One thing I do with my Aimpoint to lessen the clutter in my peripheral vision is to rotate the lens caps so that when they are open, they lay down flat against the receiver of the gun. Then they are of the way.

The bottom line is I think if you buy either, you'll get a quality product. How it performs is mostly up to you, what you expect out of it and how you use it and practice with it.

Not sure if this helps or not, just my observations.

I have a Comp ML3 with the small dot and I like it a lot.  It's in a Larue Cantilever mount.  I don't have any experience with the Eotech, but the Aimpoint is a nice piece of equipment.  Dirt simple and great battery life....two things that are nice.

Make sure to look at some low powered scopes out there also.  I still like using a scope when I am at the range for some reason.

Have both, like them both, though I probably lean more towards the eotechs for speed.

My favorite setup, Eo tech 552 on LaRue riser mount with a 3x aimpoint magnifier mounted behind it with LaRue mount.
