Does anyone know any land owners near Colombe, SD (near the Winner area) that want to get rid of their prairie dogs? I have people wanting to charge me $30/day to shoot prairie dogs they just tried to unsuccessfully poison. Surely there are some landowners out there that want their dogs terminated gratis.
Thanks, Joel |
It started with the pheasants and now it's down to the prairie dogs
On one hand I don't blame them for trying to make a buck any way they can in hard times on the other hand .. for pete sakes, they're just varmints! This year one of the landowners I know mentioned he was getting 25 bucks a day. I said "Not from me you're not". He just laughed and said "Have fun". Go to Shelly Day's Bar in Dallas and ask her who to talk to. It might cost you a drink or two but that's your best bet for that area. |

Okay. So I called "Fank Day's Bar" in Dallas, SD, due to a poster's suggestion. Very helpful. He gave me a number and I called that guy.
He said I could shoot there for free if he didn't have a father/son pheasant shoot that weekend. So I said "can I shoot Monday morning before I leave town" and he said "no problem". So Monday morning is covered. I called another land owner, from the online "landowner list", from the Winner Chamber of Commerce, and these folks are 60 miles from the place I am staying. I couldn't get them to go lower than $20 per person for both Saturday and Sunday. They say they have four sections with prairie dogs that haven't been poisioned yet. This isn't a bad price, actually, but it is a really far drive from where I am staying. So to see how many different places I could find that would let me shoot for as cheap or cheaper than $20/person/weekend, I called a few more people from the list. I even called one jackball on the list, Joe Kirwin, that wanted $110/day/person!!!!! Who is he catering to....Japanese tourists that don't know shit? The prices ranged from $20 for the whole weekend (cheapest) to $110/person/day. Most of the prices were $50 to $75/day/person. I couldn't find anyone that would let me do it for free, and I called most of the people on my list and the people that were referred from Frank Day's Bar. Conclusion: For some reason, it is really hard to find dogs to shoot for free, even though everyone wants to kill them because they are a nusiance. I don't get it. Thanks, Joel |

Oh, and thanks for the Day's Bar suggestion, meltdown. That really helped get the ball rolling. Joel no problem. Actually, Frank died a few years back and his daughter Shelly is the owner/operator. If you go hang out there on a Friday or Saturday night and buy a couple locals a drink or two you'll have better luck. Plus it's a pretty unique joint. You'll see what I mean if you ever go there

I agree. It isn't too hard to find praire dogs to shoot if you're a local. If you're not, there's a general distrust of outsiders. There's some public land out there with good shooting on it. Up by the Conota basic used to be a huge public town that had amazing shooting. But I think they poisoned them all out or at least most of them. . |
