My wife and I are really interested in moving to South Dakota. We homeschool our kids and think the gun laws are much better than the WELFARE state(MINNESOTA) we live in now. I'm retired military and my wife works from home so we can move anywhere. My question to the people of that great state is where is the best place to move to and why? We both like classic cars and love to shoot our guns, I took up deer hunting last year and would like to do small game hunting too. I would probably be moving in a year, that is if I can sell my house in this liberal state. We are a Christian family looking for a good Baptist church also. I have alot of research on SD for about a year and I like the sound of Watertown. My kids will be going to college in a few years so I need to find a good school for them also. Any and all help is appreciated. Great many THANKS.

Pretty much anywhere in SD besides Sioux Falls would probably be alright.  You might like SF but I'm not a fan of that city at all.  Watertown is nice, not too big, not too small.  Great hunting in that area.  SDSU is in Brookings which isn't terribly far from there.  Black Hills State U in Spearfish, USD in Vermillion, and the one I'm currently attending for engineering, SD School of Mines and Tech in Rapid City.  There are a lot of quality universities in SD and a bunch of good tech schools also.

If I had to pick a place to move to though, it would be the Rapid City area.  I grew up in Huron, before I moved out here for school.  There is so much more variety of things to do, still lots of good hunting oppourtunities, and Black Hills National Forest is huge and open for shooting.  The weather in winter is mild compared to the rest of the state (it's called the Banana Belt for a reason )  But there is still all sorts of snowmobiling and skiing oppourtunities.  I think Rapid has about 75K people,  so theres more shopping, dining, entertainment, etc. without a lot of the big city problems.  Kool Deadwood Nights is a big classic car show in Deadwood every year, plus the Corvette and Mustang rallys that draw a lot of cool cars out of the garage.  Not to mention all the cool historical and interesting stuff there is to see out here in the Hills.

Hopefully my rambling helps a little bit...Let me know if I can help any more.

I lived in Watertown for 2 years while attending the Vo Tech there. Its not a bad place to live. I graduated in 02 and theres a ton of new stuff in that town since I moved back to Huron. Ive heard that Watertown has a 100 yard rifle range and a good car show but I havent been to either one. Theres also lots of good colleges within a few hours of Watertown.

If I had to start over I would probably choose the Rapid City/Black Hils area. It just seems like theres so much more to do out there. Dont forget the Impala rally, and if you wanted good pheasant hunting youd only have to head east for about 5 hours. As far as deer hunting goes you could probaly have a good hunt anywhere in the state.

Sioux Falls has about anything you could ever want. Its population is roughly 100K. Not sure It would be an enjoyable place to live. They do have a nice indoor pistol range though.

Im in Huron right now. Tons of family and freinds here is probably why I stay. Just not much to do here. There is excellent pheasant hunting, and they have a decent car show. Theres also a Rifle/Pistol range but Ive never been there as I shoot on private land.

Havent really spent much time in any of the other towns in SD. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I do have a stupid question as I have never been to SD, do they have any poisonous bugs/spiders. My wife doesn't want to move any place that has dangerous bugs. I used to tell her stories about the spiders in Oklahoma when I was at Fort Sill Army base and she said no way to moving where poisonous bugs live. I really like the way your state sounds like a Patriotic state. Minnesota is very beautiful state but we give everyone welfare here and it is turning into a third world country. People come from all over the world and US because there is no waiting here for a welfare check. Thanks for all the input fellas. ---------Tony

I live in Watertown. As far as hunting and fishing goes...it doesnt get much better. I think it is a great city to live in...very little crime...good schools. I also attend SDSU. On the interstate its only a 35 minute drive. Ive been all over South Dakota and I think you will enjoy it wherever you decide to live!

There are rattlesnakes west river (west of the missouri river) but otherwise its probably not much different than Minnesota.

I don't believe the base will be closing any time soon.  I know BRAC or whateve that comittee is that was closing them down had Ellsworth slated as one of the ones to be decommed, but decided against it after appeals or something.  I don't remember all of the details but I do know the base is alive and well, I see the B1's flying over Rapid all of the time.  There are also a lot of students at Tech from the AFB.

As far as the dangerous bugs and stuff, yes there are rattlers out here, but I've never seen one and probably never will unless I go looking for them.  Other than that living in the Black Hills is great as far as bugs go.  There is nowhere near the mosquito and gnat problem as in Eastern, SD in the summer.
