I am reminded by the locsl news that it has been 20 years since the Medina shoot-out.  I think of that every time I drive by that town.

I was a junior in high school when it happened.  The day after, my friends dad came home from work, set down for supper, and then relaxed with a beer.  He looked out the window and noticed a police car parked at each of his pickup.  He went out and asked the police what was going on.  They said a vehicle that fit the description of his was missing in the Medina area and it was suspected that Gordon Kahl may have stolen it in his get away.  After checking out the vehicle the police decided that it was not the same one.

About ten years later I worked with a man that grew up in the Medina area and lived there until the early 1990s.  He knew Gordon Kahl.  He said Gordon was always talking about the Govt.

My coworker couldent understand why the police tried to arrest Gordon in the manor they did. Leaving a political meeting with guns in hand and several armed comrades close at hand.  He said he would always see Gordon in Carrington at the John Deere dealer or the grain elevator alone and unarmed, just shooting the breeze about all the faults of the govt.

While not as famous as the Waco stand-off or the OKC bombing it is another example of how locking horns with the govt. is something you should not try at home.

As I understand it people with his kind of thinking covered Quite an area in central eastern North Dakota.

Makes you wonder how many are still out there.

My parents were friends with one of the officers killed in the shootout. I can't remember his name offhand but I guess I used to play with his kids. I was to young to remember that as I was just a little guy..
