No idea where to even start. What paperwork do I fill out?
I meet the basic requirements (over 18, no felonies, etc) but not sure of anything after that. |

Where are you located in MI? Find a reputable dealer near you and go from there.
You can go two ways: Trust, or Individual Form 4's. If you go the individual route, make sure your closets LEO will sign off on your form 4's, if not, you will have to go the trust route. The suppressor section here has a good FAQ page. Look under Armory. Anyway, the forms are easy to fill out, but prepare your budget, I thought I'd get 2 or 3 suppressors and now I have 9 with plans for more. |

I've heard about our local LEO not willing to sign the forms. What's the difference between a trust and a Form 4? And my first suppressor will be for my little 1911 .22lr

Plenty of options in the Grand Rapids area, I'm not familiar with anyone in K Zoo. Dig around the Suppressor sub forum in the Armory for the difference between trust and individual. If your CLEO won't sign, then you will have to go the trust route.
Lots of good .22 suppressors out there. I have 2 SiCo Sparrows, and they run well on my SIG P220 with factory threaded conversion kit. If I had to buy now, I might look at the offering from Dead Air. |

Easiest way, Silencer Shop
Use their build a Trust form. Really easy. Cheaper than most. 100% works with ATF and good in this state. Print it out and get it notarized. Their prices are about as good as any. Pick out the suppressor you want. Pay for it. Send them back the notarized copy of your Trust. They take care of the rest. They will find the Class 3 dealer closest to you that they already do business with. They will fill out all the forms. I've done NFA both with and with out a Trust, finding my own dealer and using Silencer Shop. By far the Silencer Shop process was easiest. Hardest part is finding the funds to pay for it and the 4-6mo wait. |

NRA American Rifle mag I received today has an article about obtaining a silencer and mention silencershop.com and using their site to set up a trust. |

They should not charge you to fill out the paperwork. If they do, find another dealer. They should only charge a transfer fee if you ordered it from somewhere else, similar to a FFL transfer fee if you order a gun from Budsgunshop.com or online. What you want to do is get a trust made. Then find a local shop with suppressors and find the 22lr you want and buy it. You and the dealer will fill out the Form 4 and mail/email it in with a copy of your trust and $200 tax stamp. Wait 6 months for it to be approved and go shoot it. There are a little more details than that but you get the idea.
I had a trust drawn up by a lawyer. All my lawyer friends told me to do this because they didn't know about NFA trusts. Afterwards, I cant say that I would recommend that anymore than just paying $60 online for a trust. It sounds really complicated for your first suppressor but you will see that there is really nothing to it. It's a basic fill in the blank form. |
| Well this topic just pushed me to do it. Went to the Silencer Shop web site, paid the $130, filled out the info online and received the pdf documents to get notarized and returned. All in one quarter of the Sunday night football game I am watching. So far pretty easy but I am not sure of the filing with the court system, Michigan is one of the few that requires it but they did include the registration document as well. I am hoping I can buy a suppressor and add a SBR all at once. |

I went the attorney route and was told I did not have to file anything with the courts, but the document was necessary for it to be a vaild trust so I simply keep it with the trust locked away. Your mileage may vary of course so don't take what I say as gosepel. After I got mine notarized I literally went to the store and bought a suppressor an hour later. The next day I efiled two SBR's. All went thru no problems. |
