I live on the otherside of the State and there are some public ranges here, but they're all pretty dumb. I was thinking about driving a couple hours and trying out the Pit to zero some of my rifles and all that good stuff. Is it as infested there with idiots that go shooting as the public ranges around here? Is there alot of room on the "firing line"? |

Holy crap they pushed the line forward A lot more parking off the road than there was before. Before, even when there weren't that many shooters they would issue parking tickets to people who parked on the road cause there was no place else within walking distance. The distance is less (I think you can still get 100 yards from the far right at the back to the far left at the hill), but my experience has been that with the majority of shooters just blasting, it's useless to try to do meaningful sighting in most of the time. MHO, YMMV, etc. |

I've seen more safe behavior at the pit than I have at the local DNR ranges. At the local DNR ranges I've seen muzzle sweeps, people leaving loaded weapons, running to their benches during ceasefire, etc.
I think part of the reason is that it's self governance and the fact that everyone there are enthusiasts. It's definitely worth the trip. |
| The state range in Ortonville off of M15 added some 200 yard shooting positions in the last year or two in addition to 50 and 100 yards. I've never had any issues there. They do have the 6 rounds in the mag limit but that shouldn't be a problem if you are just trying to zero your rifles. |

Holy crap they pushed the line forward I paced it off at 84 yards before they made the improvements. I've experienced the same ratio of shitiots:good people at The Pit as I have at a dozen structured ranges. The upside is that it's free (well, yer taxes are payin' for it) and there is no range control. The downside is the drive (an hour for me). |

ETA: Damn, that's over 2 hours to drive. hahaha. |

There's a decent public range up by Hart. Up too 100yds, pistol and rifle range, and never terribly busy. http://www.hartlongrifles.com/ Though call ahead to see if their open. They're only open when an RSO is on. |
