Was out on my lake in Livingston County. Only walked out about 10 feet or so from the shore where the depth is maybe 4 feet. Didn't try to drill a hole. Couple ice skaters were out along the lake edge going back and forth without a problem.
Saw a couple young guys wandering out in the middle of the lake about three or four days ago. Thought they were nuts. There was still  open water in areas at the time. Just glad they didn't find thin ice.
I'm sure it'll be safe probably by Tuesday or Wednesday with the cold temps coming in, single digit lows and low teens for highs.
Too bad we're supposed to get snow, it would have been really neat for the lake to freeze and be able to see the fish in shallow water under the ice. Happened some years back, I'd see fish ahead of me while skating. They seemed curious and kept up wherever I went.

Had 2 guys on the canal behind my house yesterday and today. They left early today after all the rain. There is still a 10 foot radius of open water around my sump output and the ice looks less than an inch thick. After the cool down next week we should have some safe ice by the weekend on the canals, the lake will depend on the wind but there will be idiots people out there either way. The misses always says a prayer whenever we hear the Coast Guard chopper circling this time of year.

The lot at the launch was full today,
Me and my dad are pretty sure they are retarded, considering how bad the rain must have been fucking up the ice today

They've been out on Houghton, Cadillac and Mitchell for a while. Been hearing they are just getting on Higgins. On the way back from Illinois right now and I'll probably check out the lakes around me (30 minutes north of GR) when I get home. Been having the itch since the first cold air in November.

ETA: checked around today. Most lakes have around 2" or so. Some more, some less. Hopefully a couple will have 4" by the weekend.
