Good morning. So, I grew up in SW MI but have moved to NC. This year my mom got interested in a gun for the house. I bought her a nice model Smith Model 64-3. I just needed a way to legally give it to her. I called around and checked with the ATF website about recieving a gun out of state. It's perfectly fine. I used to work for an FFL in nc and we received guns all the time from individuals... But it was a while ago. So I called my old stand by shop from when I lived there. On target. They said no problem...
Thinking I'd save a trip to Kalamazoo I walked into "The Gun House" in St Joe. The guy seemed nervous about it. I offered to show him on the ATF site where it said that he could receive from individuals. Then he asked about "registration papers from NC." There is no such thing. So he asked about a receipt? Well. I have one. But it doesn't say what was bought or where. Just a debit card record. So he started blathering on about how it could be stolen and he doesn't know that... Fair enough. So why would I give him a copy of my license and offer my CPL if it was stolen? He would have had all my info... Pretty easy to track me down... He tried to tell me that if an FFL had mailed it, he would have vetted the gun as being mine. But that's not true. They just box it ship it and record it in the book.... Very frustrating. I told him the only reason he's never had a ha gun shipped by an individual is because the USPS doesn't take them from individuals. And fed ex is too expensive and requires you to go to the shipping center. So. There I am. Any place good for transfers that's closer to Saint Joe than Kalamazoo? Thanks. The gun house is worthless |

Thanks. I found them online. But they were unfortunately closed today... Looked promising and probably a good match for the guns I favor. I even drove out there but no luck. I am leaving Thursday so I just drove to On Target. They got me fixed up.
Even the first guy I talked to was a little reluctant before it dawned on them that the only difference between me shipping it to them and me handing it to them was that fed ex wasn't getting a cut... It's amazing how much resistance you get for just wanting to stay legal... My 73yo Mom can keep her new toy... I'm proud. Now I'll go home and make her more practice ammo. |
