| I live in Wayne county and was wondering how soon I should start the renewal process before my permit expires? |
|
I asked this same question about 1.5 years ago. Someone here told me 6 months. At first I thought that was exaggerated. I decided to take their advice and started the process at the end of the November before my May expiration the next year. Got my renewal a few days before my original expired. Almost 180 days after I turned in my cash payment and all the necessary paperwork. For what it's worth... knowing how things work downtown I made sure to"cross all my T's and dot all my I's" with all of the forms.
Good Luck! |
| Obviously it's better to apply early and have the new license prior to the current one's expiration. However, if that isn't possible, your receipt of application for renewal and expired license are sufficient. See Section 4 numbers 2, 3, and 4 from the following PDF for info: http://michigan.gov/documents/ri-012_7736_7.pdf |

I renewed mine in Oakland County at the end of last year. It was going to expire in May. The problem with renewing the license too early is that it is good for no more than five years so instead of expiring 5 years after my old one did, it expires 4 years after my old one. I think I received it in January 2012. Five years would be January 2017 but it has to expire on your birthday. May 2017 would have been 5 years and 4 months so the new expiration date is May 2016.
The lady at the clerk's office said it would be better to turn in the forms a month or so before your birthday (Am I correct in remembering that there's a timeframe where you can turn it in too late and you don't get to use your old license with the receipt?). She said when they review the paperwork and if your birthday is coming right up that they will hold it until your birthday and then issue it so you get the whole 5 years. At that point, I was already there so I just filed it anyways. Raffi |

What do you do if you have a Wayne county issued CPL and are moving into Oakland county? I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but it is a Michigan CPL not a Wayne or Oakland County CPL. You just need to get it issued by your local police department. It is good anywhere you move to in the state. When you need to get it renewed, you will have to go to the new local police or sheriff's department. Raffi |

At that point you would follow Oakland's procedure for filling out a renewal app. |
