I want to get my dad a pistol for his birthday.  We both have our CPL, so is this possible in MI?  If it is possible, what steps do I need to take?  Is it as simple as, I go and buy pistol, bring it to police station as usual, then give it to him, and then he would need to take it to the police station to put it in his name?  Or could this be considered a straw purchase, even though we both have our CPL, so we both can obviously own a pistol in MI?

Thanks

Nope, not a straw purchase.  A gift is g2g, I've bought 2 for my wife.  And you don't need to take it in.

Just mail/drop off your registration as usual.  Then when you give it to him, he does the same.

You can gift it and have the paperwork ready (with CPL): http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ri-060_6454_7.pdf

Just remember you don't need to bring the gun to the police/sheriff station anymore.

One thing to keep in mind is to know what he wants before you go to pick it up.  I bought my friend a basic training graduation gift when he got home, and they almost wouldnt sell it to me despite the numerous regs that state you can buy a gun as a gift for someone.  In the end the store did let me pay for it and him register it, but buying it and then doing the hand off on our own time is ALOT easier.

Gifting to a family mamber you're GTG.  Gifting to a "Friend" gets into that gray area where the selling shop could think it's a straw buy.  That's why its better to keep your mouth shut and not discuss your plans with the guy that has the say so weather you get to buy or not.

There was a saying back in the 40"s, "Loose lips sink ships".  It still holds true today.
