So the wife is graduating here in the spring, and a company she has connections to is hiring, but they're hiring up in Michigan. Her choices of places to apply is Troy, Kentwood, or Shelby Township. I told her I thought Kentwood would be the best bet because it's the only one that isn't close to Detroit, but I literally know nothing about the state.
Is Kentwood the best of the three? Will a guy without much experience in anything other than manufacturing be able to get a job up there? I'm thinking I'm probably just better off going back to school if we have to move up there. |

I'd go w/ Kentwood as well. The Grand Rapids area is beautiful, and you're pretty close to the big lake.
No idea what the job situation is over there. Probably better than the Detroit area (where I'm employed and live), but still suffering. Hopefully a local will chime in. K |

K There will be some manufacturing, but much of it will be jobs looking for a particular specialty-and there are plenty of local unemployed people to hire that already have the skills the company is looking for. |
| I would run as far away from Michigan as you can . With Andy Dillon being appointed to Rick Snyders Team we are f ing doomed . They should put Crime Scene tape up on the Michigan border (because whats happened in MI is a F ing crime ). There are no jobs , and the F ing Unions will sell your ass down the river just for fun (as long as they get THEIR pension and Benifits for life) . The Youth should run from Michigan as fast as they can!!!!!! |

Yeah, do not come here dude. We have (or did have) the worst un-employment rate in the Union, and the MI economy shrinks daily. I know it's exciting to get a first offer out of college, but don't come unless you both have FTE jobs locked in.
If I were you, I'd go with DFW area. |
| This is only one possibility for the wife, we're keeping all our options open. I was just hoping to get a feel for the general area, looks like it ain't great, but I wasn't expecting it to be rainbows and sunshine. Fortunately, the wife's new career will be well more than enough to support us, we've got simple tastes. Going back to school is on my "to do" list and if worst comes to worst I can do that and we will live comfortably. |
| Of the three I'd go with Kentwood. The job is in Kentwood, that doesn't mean you have to live in Kentwood. There are lots of nice places to live in the Grand Rapiids area. The style of living on the west side of the state is much more appealling to me than the Detroit area. There will be more public lands and more opportunities for outdoor activities on the west side of the state. Now that said... If you can avoid coming to MI you will be better off unless Kentwood is your only good job option. |

Having just moved here from MO, I can attest that the gun laws here are a little screwy. There are "Michigan pistols", pistol permits, and some areas where you can't carry concealed, but if you have a CCW you can carry open there.
Grand Rapids is a decent area. I live farther west of there. You might get some pointers if you mentioned what line of work you were in, a little more specific than "manufacturing". |

I had heard that the Grand Rapids area had better opportunities for hunting than the Detroit area. That's a definite plus.
To answer your question, I run a lathe in a tool and die shop currently. I've also spent a few years in the business of water fountains for parks, hotels, casinos, etc. Sort of a jack of all trades but master of none. I'm sure that's a recipe for a minimum wage job, if I can find one, in Michigan. |
| Kentwood...your closer to Chicago if you wantt o spend a weekend in a big city....nice area...LAKE EFFECT SNOW!....get used to it here. I 'd have to say move elsewhere. If your wife's job does not work out she might not have a big selection of other available careers. What about you? What is that you do that will allow you to work in Michigan? As a young couple I would look at states that are on a faster recovery track, have nicer all year weather. Look at North Carolina in the Raliegh area or a state that is much more stable. |

The Youth should run from Michigan as fast as they can!!!!!! That's total and complete Bullshit. Michigan is still a nice place to live. Lots of recreation, hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, ATVing etc. SE Michigan is not Detroit. I think things will pick up now that we are getting rid of Granholm and the democratic senate. Troy is a good place to live as is Shelby. Actually you could live in Sterling Hgts and be close to both of them. Kentwood is nice, the western part of the state is more conservative and better off economically. The Grand Rapids area in pretty nice, and GR itself has a nice downtown area. There are a lot of nice suburbs around Kentwood i.e., Jenison, Grandville, East Grand Rapids, etc. etc. |
