Something I stumbled across in the 2010 survey, in the 7th district Senate race. Deb Whyman is N/A across the board- she must not have returned her questionnaire. I don't know if she has a chance of winning or not, but I can tell you that in the 90s, she was a solid pro-gun rights legislator when she was in office. She even won the Brass Roots award one year.
I recall Ken Larkin was also a supporter, don't remember if he ever got elected though.
When he was Macomb Co. prosecutor, Carl Marlinga was famous for writing the legal opinion that said the Michigan constitution DID specify the right to a CPL, which started Macomb county issuing them on a shall issue basis, several years before the state law passed.  Later on he did a bit of flip-flopping around, though (he was a Democrat).
Leon Drolet is a outspoken Libertarian-Conservative tax cutter. He led the Dillon recall a couple of years ago. A lot of tax'n'spend Democrats hate him- Miles Handy tried to get the Redford police to harass us at a protest one time.

If my math is correct, there are 36 "yes's" under the endorse column and 699 "no's".

There are a lot of districts that have all the candidates with "no's" in the endorse column, but surely there has to be at least one or more "lesser of all evils" candidate that you would at least recommend voting for, no?

Very cool info. I"ll look into it. WIth the 748 people originally on the ballot, its hard to know every history. We only list it if we're aware of it..and we do a pretty good job most times.

"Less offensive" is a dangerous road to go down and we try not to. We occasionally give people mixed ratings..either on surveys when they're generally very good but blow something relatively major (we have some deal-breakers, though.) Mixed ratings on records usually indicate that they used to stink but have been good lately. We try not to immediately ban someone for life for a bad vote or two early in their careers..but they need to prove themselves to improve their ratings.

The guide is usually much more in depth..including web sites and prior offices..and the guide for the general will include those things. We were just running out of time and wanted to make sure we got these out there.

So if less offensive is such a dangerous road to go down and you choose not to go down it, then the only other option you leave people is to simply not vote when you only endorse ~36 candidates out of nearly 750...

My 2 cents, feel free to disagree...

I think that what you're looking at is purely endorsement and that's not the case..you in many cases have a survey rating and/or statements or a record. Those are listed as acceptable/unacceptable/mixed.

If a candidate has an acceptable survey, it means that they, at least on a minimal level, support your rights. To get an an endorsement, we need to be *certain* that they support your right and will fight for it. But if you have two candidates, one returns the survey and gets an acceptable and one does not..you could probably consider that the one with the acceptable rating is "less offensive."

I follow what you are saying, but I just don't get it based on the list you provided.  Take page 2 as an example - the 12th or 13th congressional or 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th district senate - most entries are NA or Unacceptable and none are "endorsed".  Who would you recommend those folks vote for?  If none are worthy of being voted for, then what?  If the intent is to get people out to vote, I think they at least need to be given something to vote for.  Even if every candidate sucks, one of them has to suck less as far as gun rights are concerned.

Who's a "recommended" candidate for the 13th, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, since every one is NA or Unacceptable?  How about the 4th?  it would appear no one there returned a survey as they are all NA.  Do you recommend voting for Virgil Smith because he has one NA and a "Mixed" and "Acceptable" whereas all the others have at least 2 NA's?

I do not mean to diminish the work that went into the list.  I am just trying to understand what to do with the list and what to tell others if I forward it to them.  The way I see it is similar to trying to get people to eat out by putting together a list of restaurant ratings, but when a person looks at the list, they find that every restaurant in their area is either rated NA or Unacceptable and none are "recommended".  If it were me, I'd probably just stay home and BBQ at that point...  Again, just my 2 cents, so take it FWIW...

Furner, I think there may be some propagation issues? Most people can see it, but so far 3 different people have told me they can't. Try clearing your cache, though?

Kevin, would you be willing to contact the candidates in your area and ask them to return the survey? Kind of late in the game for the primary, but with the general, it would be nice.

The guide for the general election will be much more comprehensive. We initially sent out 748 surveys..that's huge..there's no way we can contact every candidate ourselves and ask them why they didn't return it. But if a potential constituant did, I bet we'd hear from some more.

Endorsements are still tricky. We try to make sure anyone we endorse is going to pull their weight..but an acceptable rating is still good. Just means we're not absolutely confident, often because we just don't know enough about them.

I would be more than happy to send out surveys and/or contact any candidate in my area if it helps you to get more responses.  Just e-mail me and let me know.

Maybe you need to keep the endorsement column as it is and just add another column for who to vote for as the last resort when all the candidates suck...

Thanks. They got the survey..but dropping them each an email asking if they completed (ha!) and if not, why, would be helpful for your district. Probably too late for the primary but not for the general. That would be really cool.

A fragment of history:

Here is the only link I could find on the web of Deb Whyman helping in the CPL push. She's mentioned as one of the State Reps speaking at a GunStock rally in 1996.
SAF Link

Somewhere in my filing cabinet I have an article in the MGO newsletter we used to put out, covering her receipt of the Brass Roots award.

Also, from the NRA website (NRAPVF.ORG):

District 7
 (R) PATRICK J. COLBECKC+
 (R) ABE A. MUNFAKH        B+
 (R) DAN OSTERMAN        ?
(R) DEBORAH WHYMAN  A+     <(Endorsed)

Aside from RKBA issues, she was also one of the first people to stand up and publicly oppose "affirmative action" laws, way back before it was popular. Even among Republicans, almost none would take a public stand against it in the 1990s (until Mike Cox did,  around ~2004, I think.) . Documented here: Link

Go to the Secretary of State website and find the voter info page.  You put in your info and it shows you what your ballot looks like with links to the candidates websites.  Check each one out.  Some will come right out with I will vote down down raising taxes at every opportunity I have and I am pro 2nd.  You can also read the verbiage of any other things on the ballot instead of trying to figure out the legalese at your polling place.

Here is the link...
