I am going to be selling my snub-nose .38 spl and wanted to get some opinions on whether or not I am understanding the law correctly.  This is the first time for me selling a handgun.

For a private, person-to-person sale, all the buyer needs is a purchase permit from his local Sheriff dept.
I fill out my slip on the purchase permit, he fills out his and one gets filled out to mail to Lansing.

That is all that is needed for the transaction to be legit.  Is this correct?

your the seller, you fill out all 4 copies, you  keep one, he keeps one and the other 2 are dropped of by him to his local PD, make sure the purchase permit is notarized, then its all legal

Or if the buyer has a CPL, he doesn't need the purchase permit. CPL is good enough.

I was actually wondering about this recently.... if the buyer has a CPL then no paperwork needs to be filed??

No, must still fill out the Pistol Sales Record (RI-060) seller keeps a copy, buyer keeps a copy and 2 to your local Police department.

The 2 go to the buyers local PD having juristiction, from the link above:
Distribution: One to the seller; one to the purchaser. Within 10 days, the original and one copy must be submitted by the purchaser to the police or sheriff department having jurisdiction where the purchaser resides. The law enforcement agency mustthen forward one copy to the MSP.
