Hey, I'm a pretty excited. I just got my AKS-74 receiver today. So, I just need to buy a couple more compliance parts and it will be all set to be sent to a builder.

So my question is for you guys who have done this before, do I need to register this as a pistol right now? Since "Technically" I do own an AK now. Or am I supposed to send it off to a builder, and once I get it back, THEN I take it to be registered? How does this work? Just show up at a local police station and tell them I need to register it right there in the police station?

Technically a virgin rifle receiver is neither until its built. Thats why the ATF put stripped receiver on the form now. If you know what the caliber and barrel length are gonna be you can reg it now if you want. Otherwise wait 'till its built. It's only a civil infraction now to not reg it. The PD does not need to see the firearm to reg anymore as there are no longer safety inspections.

I was thinking of a Ak pistol build when I read your post. If its a rifle build that falls in the stupid grey area of MI law (rifle 26-30OAL) then the barrel length is probably 16" anyway.

Huh? Are you implying that I wouldn't need to take my AKS-74 (side folder) to the police station to have it registered?

I didn't take my Yugo underfolder in, I just dropped off the blasted not-really-REGISTRATION forms.  They even had an old comments box to put them in so no one would have to bother with accepting them in person.

Im not implying anything. Michigan changed the law and got rid of the safety inspection process. You just have to register it by filling out the form at the PD. You do not have to present the gun. Only fill out the form. If you have a CPL you can even download the form on line and mail it in.

Well, that is awesome. Thanks, I had not heard about this new development.

Got mine a while ago.

Had the yellow registration cards sent back to me twice, first time was because they didn't see Arsenal of Bulgaria in their list of manufactures.

The second time was because they wanted the caliber listed as .21 and not 5.45x39.

Went down to the PD today and got it all sorted out, They would have sent it back again because they also have to list what type of firearm it is, she asked me if it was a blackpowder.
