I have read extensively about all of the problems in Detroit.

What are some of the good things about Detroit and Metro Detroit?

Let's talk about the Pro's of this area - I know there has to be some...

After spending 15 years in manufactoring in this state, I would say we have the best skilled and semi skilled tradesman in the Country and our engineers are second to none. I just wish manufactoring would come back to this state.

We have the best fresh water lakes and forests too. I love this state, even if the weather is a little wonky from time to time

Hope and change!   Yah...right!

I was there last week.

A town run into the ground by crooks is still a TOILET.

LET'S GO RED WINGS

...and the People Mover.  Going down there this Satuday for the game against the Black Hawks.  Staying at the Marriot.  It's a blast.  Fidy cents gets you around the whole down town and no need to worry about a DUI.

I work in the D and trust me it IS A TOILET...

I mean even during the final four the mayor of another city (Indianapolis) got robbed!!!!

But there can be good times when you go downtown: wings, tigers, lions  SLO's BBQ is always delicious but if you come out your car might be teetering on cinder blocks (happened to my friend 3 wks ago)

I was attacked and almost killed in Greektown of all places walking out of the Old Shelaleigh.  Even after that, I am a fan of Detroit and wish it could be restored to its strong self.

and even in it, like me.

Seriously, though, there's great nightlife, sports, if you're into that, some really great museums, nice parks along the waterfront and Belle Isle, some amazing restaurants, and really most of the things that make city life interesting.

is there a lot of crime? well, I've been a resident of the city proper for nearly 15 years, and I've never been victimized, but I know YMMV. sure, there's crime in Detroit. just like there's crime in any place where a concentration of people live.

is the City Council populated by asshats? most certainly. that's why I'm going to run for City Council next time a vote comes around. I'm sick of complaining to others, and I'd rather at least try to force the Council to behave like adults, even if I can only do it by publicly shaming them in person.
of course, with all the racists in Detroit, I suppose I have only the slimmest chances of getting elected, but you can't win if you don't try.

I think anyone with an open mind can see the greatness that used to exist in the city, and the greatness that could be achieved in the future, if the right steps were taken (and if the locals would actually get off their asses and show some goddamned pride for once. not just in words, but in actions.)

The Detroit Metro area is a nice place to live because traditionally people have disposable income. This means that there's a lot of cool shit to do and you don't have to travel far to do it. Our school systems outside the city are pretty good when compared to similar 'burbs across the nation. The roads are always trashed from so many semis moving things to support making cars, but there always seems to be enough money by hook or by crook to get things done.

The only real problem with Detroit are the Detroiters that Detroit is famous for.

Wayne county = half shit (Detroit, Ecorse, etc.)
Monroe County = 10% shit
Oakland County = 10%-20% shit

What I find interesting is that there are more people on welfare living in matchbox trailers up north than there are people on welfare in Detroit projects.
