| I know you cant use your cpl for commercial purposes ie bodyguard, security etc. What kind of license do you need to get in order to legally use firerms as a business? |

Thats a new one for me. I thought if you wanted to carry concealed for work reason you just got a CPL. Where did you see otherwise.
From MSP FAQ: "2. I work as a security guard. Does my profession entitle me to carry a concealed pistol without a license in Michigan as required by my employer? MCL 750.227 No. You can only carry a pistol while on duty on the premises of your employer and only if it is exposed. If you wish to carry a pistol concealed, you must obtain a concealed pistol license through the county gun board." |

My understanding from what i have found is that to protect property commercially, you need to be licensed (secrityguard type), but as a body guard, protecting a person, you don't need to be licensed as long as there is no property involved in michigan.
Taken from Department of labor and economic growth; Do bodyguards or bounty hunters need to be licensed? Bodyguards do not need a license as long as they are protecting a person (or 'body'). However, when they are protecting valuables on a person or for a person, they are required to have a secuirty guard license. Bounty hunters are not regulated under Michigan law. http://www.michigan.gov/dleg/0,1607,7-154-35299_35414_35470-114624––,00.html |

Getting a license as a security guard company requires:
Either: 1) 3 years full time LE work, OR 2) bachelors degree in a certain set of fields, 3) 3 years experience working as a security guard, for a licensed company. And a handful of insurance req's. I will try to find the law, unless someone beats me to it. I believe you will find it at the DLEG website, under licensed occupations. CPL is fine, that's all the protection company I worked for required. Bodyguards need no license, but security guards do. |

My understanding is that most armed private security guards work under the license of the company.
The guards themselves have to have a CPL so they can carry in a vehicle, like an armored truck, but they don't need a "Security Guard License," per se. The company itself has a license and the guards work under that. Now, if you wanted to start your own company, you'd have to get the license yourself. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. |
