Can anyone share what buying an auto SMG in MI requires. What guns CAN be purchased and from where? Thanks! |

Anyone with a clean record, time, and money can buy one. First thing is to find a MG you want to buy. Can be from any State. Pre 86 transferables only. The rest are for dealers only. Subguns.com as well as the EE here are good places to check. In the 9mm SMG relm your talking from $3000 for a Mac11, $6000 for a UZI, and around $15000 for a MP5. Then work out a deal with the seller. If the seller is not a dealer and its out of State the $200 tax has to be paid by the seller and buyrer ($400 basically). Some sellers include this in the cost, some will negoiate it, others will make you pay it on top of the MG costs. Basically it gets transfered to their dealer (Form 3), then to your dealer, then to you (Form 4). Kinda like any out of State purchse only you have to use a Class III dealer and pay a tax on the trans. Then get with a dealer here in MI that will help you with the paper work. Where do you live and we can recommend a few. Two original copies of the application, signed off by local Chief LEO, two sets of finger prints, and two residency forms. Send those with $200 to ATF. Then get ready to wait 3-6 months. In the mean time save up for ammo cause you burn it fast. Once all the approved paper work gets sent back to your dealer, pay the dealer their fees ($50-$100 average) and take possession of your new investment/toy. |

Theres a few in the Dealers Willing to do Trans section at the top of this forum. I used Dave at Great Lakes. As Hyperion states a dealer can help alot and he was alot of help and made it a pretty easy (although long and expensive) process. David G. Subguns.com has a great forum. Uzitalk.com is another great full auto forum. They have forums on Uzi, Mac, Ruger. There is a full auto forum here to under the Armory section. Check them out. If your into 9mm subguns a M11 with a Max11 upper (max-11.com) is hard to beat. Will run about $4500 when its all said and done. Uzis are nice but over rated in my book. If you have the cash a M16 9mm or MP5 are top of the line. If your looking for .223 then a FNC is a good deal. Ruger AAC556 (full auto version of Mini-14) are a nice price but not known for their accuracy if thats important. And of course of the cash you can go to the M16. For even more cash you can get into belt fed, M60, M2, or RPD. Your pocket book and wants are the limit. |

If you mean because of changes in the law, not likely. AG Cox's opinion was right in line with the law. The law clearly states that you can own them in MI as long as the ATF says ok. The old AG Frank Kelly's opinion was political in nature and was not in line with the letter or intent of MI law. He made a big deal about the word "license" if I recall and that MI does not have a MG license. When in fact the law was only refering to the ATF Form3/4 process not some seperate MI MG license. For any change to be made it would involve a new law banning ownership. Again not likely as MI has been loosinging up on firearm realted issues for law abidding citizens. That plus the politicians have alot more to worry about. If they did change the law you would have plenty of notice as these things dont happen over night and you would have to just resell it. This change has been in effect for what 2-3 years now, and theres been no issues. The only way for it to be legally confiscated at this point is for you to f__up with it or get convicted of some felony, thus loosing all your gun rights. |
Such an opportunity to opine on my favorites..... But, I'll keep myself in check and merely suggest that you shoot a few of the more commonly available types before making a decision. Your budget will probably dictate your choice more than anything. Check out machinegunprices.com to provide a rough guide about market fluctuations and availability. Some of your options will include: MAC 10/11, (PS, TX, w/Lage uppers) UZI, (micro, mini, full, vector, IMI) Sten series, (Stenling) Spitfire M2 Sterling MK4 (PAWS, DLO tube, conversion, factory) Swedish K, S&W 76, Mk760 MP40 PPSh41 Beretta38 American180 H&K MP5 Thompson (1921/1928, M1A, WHurley) Ask yourself some questions: Do I want to be able to throw on a .22LR conversion kit? Some have this flexibility, others don't, some kits don't work as well as others. The American 180 is a dedicated .22LR. Is this a shooter or a collector investment? (Class III investment is discouraged for a variety of reasons) Do I want a factory original item or would a remake/off brand work ok for me? You should know that foreign made SMG's were prohibited for non-dealer uses after implementation of the 1968 Gun Control Act. Domestically manufactured versions of the foreign weapons are available for non-dealer transfers if they were made prior to May 19, 1986. Should I consider a rifle-caliber weapon? Some of these have SMG conversion kits too, like the M16 (probably the most versatile platform). Go shoot some of these weapons before you make your choice. Then, you'll probably go get a full-sized UZI before they would process the pistol "safety inspection". |

Funny thing is the Detective at my pd ask me the same thing when getting the F4 signed. I replied "that the voices in my head told me I need them". He said "Thats not the answer I was looking for". I told him "But thats the answer he was going to get". At which time we both laughed! |
